Thought I'd give Bulletstorm a go, heard good things, so I bought it on steam

Fire up the game, usual steam directx setup etc and get shown the CD key. As with most steam games I ignored it, I'm playing on steam - why would I need a key?

"Please sign in to Games for Windows Live"

My heart immediately sinks, I've had problems with GFWL in the past. After a bit of head scratching, I remember my account and sign in. Profile downloads then "please enter CD ley. Que lots of awkward alt-tabbing back and forth since I'm not able to copy directly from the steam overlay to the game...
"GFWL needs an update"
Ofc I tell it to update, it has a think about it then
"Please exit the game to proceed with update"
GFWL disappears and I'm back on the Bulletstorm splashscreen. There's no quit option. I hesitantly press 'continue' again and get back to the GFWL sign in screen. I go through it again, hoping it'll be different this time.

It isnt.

A bit of googling later, I install find, download and install the GFWL PC client. It installs and updates ok. I'm getting there! Fire up the game again, here we go"

"Unable to connect - code (something random)"

I google the code, generic check your connection issue. My connection is fine, so I try again and it logs me in!

Finally I'm at the game menu! I go into the options to set controls etc and immediately notice mouse smoothing. I die a little more inside. There's no option to disable it

More googling, it CAN be disabled by editting an .ini file BUT the file is encrypted and you need a 3rd party app to change it.

This is now 50 minutes (not counting typing time for this rant) since I originally hit 'play' in steam...

...and I can't really be arsed playing it any more

its rediculous that you have to use GFWL and Steam at the same time, theres a reason why i avoid GFWL like a 3 legged hooker. Same price, same treatment, getting fucked in the arse.

I bought Arkham Asylum on steam for coins but never played it due to the incompetence of the programmers of GFWL. Argh! thanks for ruining my evening I FUCKING HATE THAT SHIT DIE DIE DIE!

Prehaps you shoulda renamed the thread title as to why are people ditching PC gaming for consoles.

This is my probably my number 1 reason for ditching PC gaming almost altogether for the last 3 years ie fucking about with a game for 1 hour or so to get it working by which time your so fucking annoyed with it you really can't be arsed.

An example is Spore which i bought at release and i tried for weeks when it released to get it to work but all i got was a black screen everytime i loaded the game up forcing me to restart my PC. I never actually got to play that game because after a while i just fucking gave up.

I have personally never had a problem with GFWL though.

People that pirate in my opinion are just cheap ***** who want everything for nothing then they blame the developers for switching to consoles and almost dumping the PC gaming altogether funny huh?

I'm beginning to think it's better(if you want a clean conscience) to buy it, then pirate it. You get a better gaming experience.

I had the same trouble with Batman Arkham Asylum, nearly gave up and definitely didn't enjoy the game so much due to all the faf of getting it to run. It's like I'm being treated as a criminal for buying the bloody game. All this bullshit doesn't work since with every release, same or next day the pirates have a client out which doesn't need shit to run.

This was highlighted in one of the recent PC Gamer magazines, it was a good read although I can't remember the issue no. It was the devil's advocate article.

Aada, now that Steam is coming to PS3 do you think games will start needing to be installed and running steam, etc, etc. to play the game?

Have to tell ya. I had none of these issues btw.

GfWL bothers me simply because it does fuck all but count shit and try to pat me on the head for it.

"Yay you kicked 10 people in the head, have a graphical representation of a sweetie"

Really? What happened to just enjoying the kicking of heads?

I have never had an issue with GFWL and activating products.

I have had an issue where a download stalls everytime on my laptop, with no fix.

TBH you should have bought the boxed version, pre-ordered with release day delivery cost less than it did on Steam. Steam always have issues.

GFWL is aids. Pure and simple. It varies from game to game, but it can sometimes take ages to load and log you in. It's unacceptable to me that you are forced to use it even though you are using Steam.

I will avoid games now if they use it.

It does take ages to log in sometimes yes, and that is probably the most major flaw.

The worse thing is - and I'm sure I'm not imagining this, although I can't recall which title it was, a game I bought physically, that made me use both GFWL and Steam.

edit:// think it was one of the dawn of war titles.

Really? I've never had any problems with Steam, easy to browse, easy to use, easy to install, auto updates, easy to play with friends etc. Notice none of the issues I had were anything to do with steam itself?

Aada: I'd still rather go through all this crap than play an FPS with a pad.
(Lol at auto-aim option being enabled by default)

Nothing better than a lil' picture and some virtual points!

And on a side note, aids.

even if it varies...it's still AIDS!

I've done a ragequit and gone back to linux for a while. Perhaps I will install windows again once I've calmed down :/

I don't play pc games much anymore, much less effort on my ps3 unless it's a strategy game or RPG but when I do I usually download. However I never play them for more than 3 days before getting bored and never touching them, if I played them more i'd probably buy them.

I have a similar problem with EA games.
Mirror's Edge on the PS3 needed an EA login in addition to PSN. I grudgingly created an account. I don't see any benefit as a customer.

Fast forward to this January and I install Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. Once again, it wants me to sign into EA to activate my "Cerberus Network" DLC. Then to install the DLC, you need to download the files through EA's site. Ummm, I bought the game on Steam and expected Steam to handle the updates and DLC. Guess I was wrong.

I buy games through Steam because most of the games I play are Valve titles or Source engine games. My account is worth: £476.35 GBP

I had exactly the same problem.

fixed it by downloading the seperate windows live program, which took me to some x-box site & registered there, and not on the screen they give u in the game.

very confusing :(

Can't say i agree there, GFWL works as well as steam, both wankerific ofcourse, but still.

Your issues with bulletstorm seem, well, personal not technical.

Title should be "this is why i buy boxed games" ;)

I have never had a problem with Steam except when GFWL gets involved, probably 100+ purchases on there, the only ones to have caused me problems are ones that insist that you log into GFWL to play. The sooner MS stop flogging that dead horse the better.

Had issues with GFWL with Fallout 3 but never for any other GFWL games. Just went on that Steam Calculator it Found 128 Games with a value of
$1824.73 USD, bloody hell.

Trying not to be a Valve fanboi but I love Steam, its easier than any games platform i have ever used, the sales are the icing on the cake, its actually made me move away from my 360 and Wii because its so much easier, no longer do I have to have stacks of DVD cases or DVD wallets carrying all my games I can just login and play, downloading a game is not a problem, just leave the machine on when I am at work and its finished by the time I get home. All my mates are on there and it makes for a more unified gaming experience.

Steam takes too long to start up now. The thing should be much faster considering the length of time it's been about now.
