As the title suggests, I'm getting shite speeds in Bitcomet on cable. I've got a 2Mb line and I'm scraping 30K, finalgear torrents are just sitting there scratching their collective arses.

Ideas anyone? I can't afford newsgroup access :|

fact of life in the uk BB market. Your connection will have been shaped and there's likely sod all you can do :(

Are you 100% it's not just a crap torrent? Get on an official torrent for ubuntu or something, those *always* max out.

download speed is very subjective, however as they we have said download other things to find out if its a isp problem...

however, you should be able to find out at what speed you are connected at on your router settings, if its 'wanky' there then contact your isp, or try to get a new router

Nah it's just bittorrent.

some ISP's cap how much you can download from a P2P thing, also maximum connections(i believe its integrated into WinXP SP2, if what i was told is true)

NTL/Virgin are capping 10mb connections if you download too much in a month. Which connection are you on Bodlar? The other speeds are unaffected. I am on 4mb and have been getting shit speeds at night but all is fine in the day. I could of swore cable was not meant to suffer from slow down.

  1. Bitcomet is crap and most places designate it a shit client, ditch it and use uTorrent.
  2. Turn on the encryption in the settings.
  3. Use a randomised port (this setting is in uTorrent and works well with uPnP routers) and then restart the client on a regular basis (daily is normally sufficient).
  4. Admit the PS2 is not a god ;)
  5. Leech

Edit: For reference

This seems to have been the most useful advice. I've ditched Bitcomet and downloads are much faster now. They still aren't stunning mind - 100K/s on 2Mbit cable seems a bit low. I've turned encryption on and everything.

What torrents are you downloading? Remember that the download speed of everyone in the torrent swarm is only equal to the upload of all peers. If enough people aren't seeding then you'll be relying on peers who are still downloading.

As for newsgroups, if you're with blueyonder then the blueyonder news server isn't too bad. If you're in an NTL area then I'm afraid I've got no idea what the NTL news server is like. The retention for blueyonder binaries server is apparently only 4 days and there are quite a few newsgroups missing, but apart from that it's not too bad!

There is also newszilla6.xs4all.nl, an IPv6 only news server. It's limited to 3 connections and 50kB/s max per connection (so 150kB/s or so total). Better retention but you'd have to setup IPv6 on your network to access it! :p

What about changing port Bodhi? If you're on the same port and you ISP is shaping, it'll still be shaping even if you've changed client.

Hmmm, seems I spoke to soon. All my d/l's are staying on 0K up/down. Looks like I could be giving giganews a shout at this rate :|

If you want, use the e-mail form on me profile to send us links to the various bits you're trying to D/L, I'll have a look and see what's the problem. 0k up/down often means you're breaking the tracker rules somehow and you're being "shit listed" as a result.

I assume that you have a little green "Tick" mark in your uTorrent status bar?

No, that's orange at the moment. For some reason it keeps telling me the port I'm using is blocked, even when I turn my firewall off. Seems a bit weird, as I can't think of any other way of opening ports :|

You are sharing properly aren't you? You're not leeching everything?

I don't know much about it, but I use Azereus and it has fancy lights at the bottom telling you if everything is cushty with things called NAT tables and databases. Haven't got a fucking clue what it means, but its all working right.

On Oink I get downloads of 400k (on 4MB)

Lol at my edit reason, was a watch I was looking at and had it on my clipboard :D

Oink is not a usual torrent site Tom, you will always get uber speeds on it because they are so strict about ratios. If you don't share you don't survive on there.

I wouldn't use those tweaks if you're running on sites with strict rules and guidelines. Distributed Tracker is normally a no no.

They'd probably work very well however if you just whore crap off Mininova

Interestingly, I've just rebooted into an old install of XP and I get the green light and my downloads are going at around 200K a sec. So something is clearly amiss with my new install. Thing is tho it has no firewall and I'm hooked up directly to an ntl cable modem, so I have no idea why uTorrent can't open any ports. It doesn't seem to be a tweaking issue, as I'm currently downloading using a vanilla install of uTorrent, so I'm completely bewildered.
