XP allows you by default to "stretch" the wallpaper to fit, whereas in previous versions of Windows you needed the "Plus" add-in pack to do this.
To get a good picture using the stretch option, it needs to be the same ratio in dimensions to your screen, i.e. one of the more regular screen resolutions;
Note that many graphics cards and monitors support 1280x960 and other wierd resolutions that happen outside this common ratio, these happen to match a few common sizes from Digital Cameras, which would normally be mis-stretched if used for a common resolution.
