I am silly thinking that a VPN is for wireless units only?

We have a VPN at work on our LAN, is that right?

Yep.

Most security concious companies these days will implement a VPN over their wireless system to restrict the dangers of some unauthorised person from "piggy-backing" on their network and gaining access to stuff they shouldn't.

VPN's have been around for years (even before ADSL was announced!) and businesses have used the resources for mobile workers and even home-based workers for years... of course these days they just slap up an extranet with radius solution to gain access to emails, purely because its cheaper and people only seem to use the VPN to read work emails anyhow.

a VPN isn't part of a LAN, its normally connected to the LAN by a firewall to limit the danger if the VPN does get compromised, you still have a level of security between people connected with unsecure machines (a home machine with the sober worm for example) and essential servers.

I was saying yes to you being silly.

VPN solutions are not explicitly for wireless use only.

Your company probably uses the VPN for remote workers, so they can connect into the company network through their internet connection.

Vpn is the achronym for Virtual Private Networks.
Basically it's a technology which permits (through encryption) the use of a "Public" network as it was a "Private" network.
It works over any kind of Network, be it wireless or cabled.
