So i'm running Vista Ultimate (32-bit) today on my computer. And looking on all the different updates out there i was wondering what version of Win 7 i need. Is it the Win 7 Ultimate (32-bit) version?

Or can i go for the (64-bit) version? :)

The retail version of Win7 has both 32 bit and 64 bit in the box. Do you REALLy need win7 ultimate? It's pricey. Pro has most of the features you would need.

Yup, I don't think you can upgrade to a windows 7 below what you have - so you'd be stuck with Ultimate. However, as Chet says, ultimate is very expensive indeed. Also you can't upgrade from 32bit to 64bit at all as far as I know. I think it would be worth doing a clean reinstall of Home or Pro 64bit. Last time I checked the difference in price between upgrade and full was very low indeed so it might not be worth going to the effort to upgrade.

If you format the drive then you can install 64 bit yeah but that wouldn't be classified as an upgrade technically speaking.

You don't have to format first either, you can do a clean install of win7 from within vista, it will back up your files for you as well.

Even if i want to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit, and buy a cheaper version than Ultimate. :)

Yeah it's a clean install, it will just save your user files / folders in a "old windows" folder or some such.

So if i understand it right if I buy a "full copy" i can get any version i like. But if I buy the upgrade version, i need to get Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

That I'm actually not sure about. I know for certain that you can only *DO* an upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate or from Vista Pro to 7 Pro or Ultimate etc. However, I don't know if you can BUY an upgrade disc for 7 Home and do a clean install over your Vista Ultimate. It might be worth popping an email to MS about that to ask, unless someone here knows better.

That said, if I recall correctly the upgrade prices are so close to the full retail prices that it might not even be worth trying for the upgrade disc.

If you're after a full version then talk to Ch3tan who may still have 1 or 2 to get rid off because he ended up with too many pre-orders.

Well talked with Microsoft and got the answer, if you buy upgrade version you have to follow their chart so if you got vista ultimate you need to get Win 7 Ultimate, but if you buy the full version you can get any version you like and you can upgrade system from 32-bit to 64-bit aswell.
