Well I've had the RTM version for a few days running and other than some rather nice improvements in transfers from my External hard drive there isn't much to talk about, there was something else I noticed but it was so unimportant I've forgotten what it was. The only other slight annoyance from my prespective is not being able to slipstream this SP, but even that is a minor issue.

SP1 is worth getting even if it's just to make it easier to install all those updates in one go after you do some sort of reinstall.

Nice, been running it on a VM here for a while and have noticed the same improvements to network and local transfer speeds, it also just feels a little nippier generally. Functionally there's not a great deal of different.
Will be installing the full thing upon release via Windows Update.

Well the RTM version has been floating around on torrents for a little while now, the release of it via Windows Update etc should be in about 1/2 weeks.

Hi Panda

As Embattle says, just be patient and wait for the official release this month. I wouldn't recommend using third-party downloads as they may have been modified (unlikely, but you never know).

Kind regards

It's just arrived. I was expecting a burnt DVD-R, but it's an actual microsoft DVD with Vista SP1 on it.

I'll install my new burner then I'll give it a go.

True, I remember SP2 was available for free (plus postage) from Microsoft, or given away with some computer magazines. I'm not sure if they'll continue to do this with SP3, given the increased popularity of broadband, but I guess still want as many people as possible to upgrade.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. All is well with Windows XP SP3 too :)

So will this fix the impossibly slow transfer rates between shared network folders...or is there something else I should look at?

As was said above, there are very noticable improvements in those areas.

I actually haven't installed sp1 yet, as I have the dreaded windows modules installer service problem. :( I guess I'll have to reinstall soon, and then apply the service pack straight away.

Not impressed.
Received SP1 in its final standing last night, installed this morning.

Now, it's fixed the "time left" issue with file copying but performance is still dire. 5MB/s transfer from a RAID0 drive to a 32mb cache SATA drive. Sometimes dropping to a matter of 800KB/s.

Now, I'm not sure if this is an issue relating to Vista as it stands or the well documented performance and reliability issues regarding the ICHR9 Intel Raid chipset with Vista.

Will investigate and keep informed :/

Ahh, edit for lack of memory:

Forgot to mention whilst copying it's now sapping so much resource that everything else is virtually unusable :/
Typing this edit has taken 3 attempts and 5 minutes :/

** another edit** It's now turned into another message as the edit window timed out.

Of course if anyone has any input further than that, it'll be much appreciated.

System, if anyone is interested, is as follows:

Asus P5k-E WiFi
Core2 Duo e6600
4gb OCZ Platinum RAM
Inno 3D 8800GT
2 x Hitachi Desktars in Raid0 on onboard ICHR9 controller
1 x WD 250gb drive
1 x Seagate 500gb drive
Vista Home Premium 32bit SP1

Added another Deskstar with intention of moving to Raid5, hence the copying process.

Problem solved. Fault = retarded user. Just realised the destination drive is hung off the eSATA port, the drivers of which are long outdated :D

PLEASE tell me it's going to be worth it :( Atm my vista has taken to the strangeness that is freezing if I don't log in for an unspecific period of time. ie, turn on pc, go to the loo, forget pc, play some ps3 game, read a book, remember pc, and it will be frozen and refuse to do anything until I hit reset, whereas if I login right away, it will work perfectly for as long as I want :/

Certainly worth it here - file copying and network performance has almost doubled. Also generally more responsive.

Hi guys

In case you're not seeing it via Windows Update, you can download SP1 using the following links:

Vista SP1 32-bit (434.5 MB)
Vista SP1 64-bit (726.5 MB)

Note that Windows Update's installer will offer a small download because it's tailored to your system; the above are designed for rolling out across multiple computers.

Kind regards

Jonty

P.S. SP1 in more languages will be gradually rolled out.
