When I access my shared folders over my home network on the PC that has Vista installed via \\computername I experience a large delay before the shares are shown in the explorer. At least 30 seconds or so. I do not have this problem when I access the shares of a PC running win XP. There's also no problem with the datatransfer speed between other PC's and the Vista PC in my network, streaming video's also works fine. It's just the listing of the shares that takes ages.
It seems to be a lot faster, though not as fast as with a WinXP OS, when I directly access a shared folder via \\computername\foldername.
Anyone know what's causing this delay? I've found very little info on this.

This is an age old Windows networking bug. WinNT, Win2k, Win2k3, WinXP all have the same problem. The problem is how computer names are used (NetBIOS woo!) and propagated. Chances are your XP machine has been turned on longer.

To be honest it's quite random. If you use the IP address it would be instant.

I believe there have been a number of improvements with Vista but that it's with Vista <-> Vista network sharing.

So essentially, it's not Vista's fault, it's all versions Windows that are shit at this.

You could try mapping to the ip address or adding a entry to your host file it might speed things up.

You could try getting a proper hub/router (just to spend money for a laugh)
