Ok, i'm going for it!

Can I run a complete Pc Backup (c drive) on my current 32 bit vista and be able to use/see the files in 64 bit vista? I wont want to restore the data as i will reinstall stuff but just knowing i have all my old files somewhere is handy.

Basically can i access the files instead of restoring them and just pick the ones I want?

I often find when copying the C drive in windows explorer loads of things are read only etc and you have to click a dialogue box ever 3 seconds to say yes and then it never works for half the stuff anyway as its currently in use.

You can make it so you can see files fine, but make sure they are on a different drive, as any 32-bit programs in the 64-bit "Program Files" directory will cause problems.

Best to use some software like Acronis TrueImage.

Not a Vista fan, but errrr here goes.

I'd prob recommend installing Ntbackup for an xp machine and use that.

quick how to.

grab the following 5 files from an XP install

Ntbackup.exe
Ntmsapi.dll
Vssapi.dll
Ntbackup.chm
Ntbackup.hlp

Copy them to a folder err somit like "C:\Program Files\OldNTbackup"
Add a shortcut to Ntbackup.exe to ya start menu.

Now start "
Removable Storage Management" in vista, if ya don't you'll get an error.

click
start button - control panel - programs
click "Turn Windows Features on or off"
pop a nice tick in the box next to "
Removable Storage Management"

Run NTbackup as you would on XP machine. Its not great, but from what you requested it should do the job pretty well.

Edit: found a guide. Here
