CS is less of a virus (though its arguable) and more of a DDoS imo, just look at how slow certain sites become when bombarded by 'tards and their craving for some cheat filled crap gaming.

(Hi CS'ers)

Nimda isn't a virus either - it's a worm designed purely to flood networks. Hence the comparison with a CS release.

Actually its a bit of both Someguy, the worm is part of the whole parcel but it modifies DLL's etc on the infected system.

On the upside cos the sysadmin on my Webdesign course is a moron I got the day off because of Nimda so :D

I know, I know... I was simplifying. It's classed as a worm though.

Pernickety :p:

God - I am so sick of these MS bashing opensource freaks.

A poorly configed Linux box is just as vulnerable as a poorly configed Windows box.

And WTF is the point of using linux on a desktop? Oh yeah - so you can lose the ability to :
  • Play decent games
  • Use a proper browser
  • Use some standard Office apps
  • Use the latest drivers for your stuff

Aye but windows comes poorly configured out of the box, with Linux somebody has to actually screw it up themselves

Why don't I use Linux you ask? Well, I would except microsoft has so much of a monopoly in the desktop market that no(almost) games are compatible with Linux. Horray for microsoft!

I do use Linux for everything else except playing games, however. Funny how I haven't had to worry about my website and its security AT ALL because its on Linux, and not IIS.

Exactly my point. Call me a microsoft basher, but remember, they're the ones bashing everyone else with poor support, buggy code, and monopolistic practices.

I notice that you did not address any of the issues I discussed above

Oh - and I don't worry about the security of my servers. They are all running Win2k and IIS

ok I'll rise to the bait... :/

Play decent games
I play Q3, UT, Tribes2, SMAC, Rune and HG2 atm, all on linux. I prefer UT and T2, but that's another story ;)

Use a proper browser
My browser of choice is called 'Konqueror'. I also use Opera and Mozilla.
Sometimes I even use something called 'Lynx' but I wouldn't expect you to call that a 'proper' browser as it's text based. [Even tho Lynx is prolly the most 'proper' browser there is as it conforms exactly to standerds]

Use some standard Office apps
I use StarOffice. That's a standard office app, but I guess you didn't quite mean that heh.

Use the latest drivers for your stuff
I'm sorry, but a comment like that shows that you have no idea at all how things are done heh. I admit, not all hardware is supported by the kernel, or by manufacturers yet, but peeps are catching on and more stuff is coming in daily [which is good heh]. Just an example, but my drivers _are_ the very latest cutting edge stuff I kid you not, tho I find that the latest Det. driver for my GForce2-GTS doesn't make much difference heh. Perhaps it's time for a GF3 :)

PS. One should always be concerned about server security don't you think? Especially when running IIS heh. It might have that elusive thing called 'ease of use' but for all other things it's poo if you ask me.

Your answers are: Quake 3, Mozilla, StarOffice & You should get drivers for all OS versions from any decent hardware vendor.

Happy now

Hum...

I just don't see any reason to compromise and run linux when windows is perfectly fine

lol :) very true Trebz :D

Jas if you think windows is fine, then by all means keep using it matey. I obviously don't think it's fine so I chose to start using linux [about 3 years ago] and didn't look back. Now I use it exclusively.
