Violence

A topic that has been obviously dealt with a lot by the media but is it of concern to you as a gamer?

Claims have been made that games can have a psychological affect, we have all heard it, what are your views and do you think that games should carry some kind of warning about this? - do you think ELSPA does enough to enforce its policies and position?
Do you think ELSPA carries enough weight?

With game graphics approaching a higher level of realism, especially on next-gen consoles and high-end PC hardware, will there come a point where the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) takes a position in issuing classification?

Do you think that the developers by concentrating on the visual aspects (violent imagery) of a game are not concentrating enough on the gameplay and that this can fuel the media in looking at the visuals of a game and making flippant comments?

Do the developers not take enough responsibility and employ violent themes as a sellable commodity?

As a player what role do you think realistic graphics play in contemporary games?

Does violent imagery and themes in games encourage you to buy?

In what game genre do you think violence is most represented?

Thanks for your time reading and replying, your comments are well-appreciated.

I think its a writer from a mag trying to get some cheap copy from the vitriolic scum at BW.

:D

Graphics - not that important.

Loaded and completed GoldenAxe last night.

It being ultra realistic with lots of blood and gore wouldnt change a lot. The gameplay would be the same.

No violent imagery doesnt engourage me to buy a game, but NON violent imagery does.

I mean that nerf arena game.
It could have been better tha ut2k3 but its got that Fluffy Bunny factor.

First Person Shooters/ Beat em ups.

violence in games doesnt encourage me to buy games, i just happen to buy games with guns and blood in them cuz they are more interesting. why would i pay for a game where we have to stroke bunny rabbits and blow bubbles? OH SO MUCH FUN.

if i wanted to buy scrabble or summat without violence i would. if u dont like violent games dont play them.

easy

The ELSPA isn't responsible for the rating of all games. AFAIK the grand theft auto series has legally enforcable ratings. GTA VC is rated 18, is it not?

The problem is, people (parents) still think "pah, 's just a game and lil jimmy is so insistent! I may aswell buy it for him"

Then they see the game, think it's ghastly and decide to blame someone else for their incompetant parenting.

The more realistic and graphical the better, as long as it has the gameplay to go with it, violent gameplay wont encourage me to buy the game just as non violent gameplay wont encourage me.

I play games to relax and escape from real life, violent games don't make me want to go and start randomly killing people. If someone does get the urge to kill after playing a game then they are probably psychotic anyway, and the do gooders will jump on the bandwagon claiming it was the game that made him/her do it because it was violent. You see more violence on the news and in Cinemas.

As for the BBFC rating games, the only thing that will encourage is underage kids downloading the game instead of getting their parents to buy it for them, it is up to parents and guardians to ensure their kids don't play games they deem unsuitable.

People who campaign for violent games to be banned are in the same class as people who protest about war, I think they just need something to do with their spare time.

Most Violent genres are probally FPS and RPG

I worry more about the antisocial aspects of children playing games indoors rather than going out and exploring.

The Edge forum is temporarily offline - not for hours, but not for months. While you wait for it to return, why not call up a friend you haven't spoken to for ages, or dig out that game you never got round to completing? At least live the lie and pretend you have a life, friends, possible relationships. Remember: us, them and the other guy hate you and tolerate you only because we are paid to. See you soon.

parents complaining about the violence in computer games screams of passing the buck. If you don't like the premise of a computer game stop your son from playing it. If he goes to a friends house to play it get an agreement with the friends mother to ensure he can't.

As far as 'prompting people to copy them' if you believe that a computer game is real then you have a worrying psycological problem. If you can't tell the difference between reality and a computer game........
