Have you tried gamecam?

clicky

better for lower spec machines than fraps, although this is reflected in the qual of the movies it produces

virtual dub is really only for encoding/low level editing

if you want to create effects and other things then you'd need another program

Greetings

I used Camtasia studio 2 when making a small BG video just to try it out, it seemed like a fairly decent program. Its not free software though.

For capturing video - Fraps
For editing Sony Vegas is very nice. Has a lot more stuff than Virtual Dub and its even easier to use imo.

If you dont buy FRAPS or get an hold of a 'cracked' version you cant record for more than 30 seconds/take.

Recording - FRAPS
Editing - Sony Vegas Studio

well first you need a cam, a handcam is fine

then youll need a girl, preferably two, or well if you swing that way, a guy

Then, preferably a bed, but floors, stairs, and just about anywhere else is good.

Oh wait...

imo thhe best thing is:
Fraps to take up ingame
VirtualDub take make a videos shorter, put it in a divx file
and then use Adobe Premier to cut it and put all that u want into it, its not a free software but hey, the power of the internet... =))

Check out Studio DV - version 9 is the latest. It's very good and most of all easy to use. I've used premiere and though it is a good product it's kinda complicated - well i thought so ;p

Video Vegas previously made by Sonic Foundry now Sony is very intuative and produces great results in pretty much any format you would like to distribute your vid - the other main popular progs are Premiere, Final Cut Pro if you have access to a Mac (which Cold Mountain was cut on incidentally by Walter Murch if u a film buff) all the way up to AVID progs if you earn far too much!

As far as capturing goes I've dabbled with Fraps on a hefty PC and has been fine, but personally for ease of use I found outputting the SVideo from the Geoforce or Radeon to a Dv cam or VHS even allows less disk eating/overhead and you can leave it running for hours and come back and edit the juicy bits at your leisure.

All good fun :)
