There are lots of tutorials for these progs on YouTube:

I think that a lot of the top videos are made with Sony Vegas so you might need to sort out your install problem. Suppose it depends on what you want to achieve video wise. Just to cut and add music can be done with lots of different programs - see above.

Thanks managed to aquire a copy of adobe premiere and it does the job quite well for now

Premiere's the best for home use stuff I find generally. Pinnacle is good as an entry level video editor (very easy to use, but less powerful than Premiere).
