VHS RIP

VHS is dying. After watching the brilliant band of brothers I decided I wanted to buy saving private Ryan as I had only seen the opening sequence once. First stop WHSmiths, nothing. Our price, nothing. Woolworthes, nothing. What I noticed was a big row of all the films you could ever want, on DVD.
Now I do have a DVD player built into my computer, but thats no good when I'm playing operation flashpoint or CS, so I like to buy VHS and watch it on the TV whilest playing games on my PC. Also checking the saving private Ryan DVD I noticed that it wasn't actually worth the extra £8 as the only special features were a theatrical trailer, and those darn useful mulitlanguage subtitles  . Sure the quality is better, but how many times am I actually gonna watch it. It'll probably dust it off if my girlfriend wants to spend the night in with a vid and the vid shop is closed, mind you if the girlfriends with me it'd be shaving Ryans privates as opposed to.....well you get the picture.

*Rant over*

Unless you have a good setup DVD is little better than VHS. However two main things keep DVD from the mass market:

1. DVDs are just too expensive, at nearly £20 they're twice as much as VHS.
2. Recording on to DVD is near impossible and the players that can record are very very expensive.

They're trying to counter this by releasing films on DVD at the same time as you can rent them. I've bought a couple of sets on DVD including World at War (10 DVDs), Walking with Dinosaurs(2 DVDs), The Planets(2 DVDs) because they're not much cheaper via video and I know that DVD is the future I decided it would be a wiser move.

VHS isnt shit its just getting old. Also until recordable home DVD players come way down in price it wont be going anywhere.

Fist of Legend !!! :D

DVD is a rip-off. It's just like when CDs were released they started them off at a higher price than tapes (cos it's new that's why) and the price never came down. Despite the fact that CDs are cheaper to produce than tapes. Same thing here. Gits.

Anyway, just got the T2 tinbox DVD :)

Haven't watched it yet. I got it and GTA3 yesterday so between GTA3 and washing the duvet I never found 2.5 hours to watch the DVD :/

You mean the T2 Ultimate Edition.

M8's had it on region one for months and months now, anyone been to that r1/r2 comparison site and found out which version is bettter?

Or is the r2 version for once equal to or better than the r1 version.

Oh yeah DVD's are great, they are not to expensive. DVD releases are lower at around £17 pounds now, plus the mutlitude of sales and offers in most stores makes them jsut as affordable as £12.99 videos, in some cases cheaper.

Example? I got Traffic for £9.99, I got American History X for £7.99.
I went to shops with buy one get one half price, or two fro three to get loads of warner bros DVD's for their equivelent VHS prices.

New releases come at out 12.99 still, Videos have started to become dirt cheap, but DVD prices are falling as well.

I havent bought a single VHS since I got a DVd player, I dont see the point.

I only buy films I really like, and that I will wacth again. I prefer to get them on DVD, if I bought VHS i'd end up buying the dvd eventually for the extras or quality.

I still buy VHS because the simple fact is there are films I watch that still are not out on DVD plus paying £12 for it when I can get it for less than half that isn't something I would do.

I have been buying more DVDs but still won't buy them all the time.

You have to consider that a DVD player costs £200 and you can pick up a fairly decent VHS player for £100, and it records to, a DVD player can only play. Poor people will never be able to afford DVD players.

Get your DVDs from abroad !

I get all mine from DVDBoxOffice in Canada.

The DVDs are often out shortly after film is released in UK.
Exchange rate £ to $(Can) is good.
P&P is free.
Normally arrive in 2 weeks.
Works out around £12-£14 for most of them.

Good way to protest at:
a) Films coming out 6 months after they have in the rest of the world.
b) Cinema prices (£6 a ticket - sheesh)
c) Getting ripped off for new DVDs in ths shops here.

VHS will go the way of vinyl and tapes when CDs arrived...eventually.

P.S. slight possibility that Customs will send you an invoice for import duty so try and order them 1-2 at a time.

DVD totally and utterly shits on VHS from a great height, even comparing a top notch VHS player and a PlayStation 2. It already has mass market success (next time you are in Virgin Megastore, look how much space is taken up by selling DVD's and look how much is taken up by VHS), and can only get bigger. Recordable DVD players are starting to appear, and will come down in price quicker than you think. And as for the difference in quality? That's not even fair on VHS.
