VCDs and DivX

Evening, kids.

I'd like to 'backup' some DVDs and create VCDs out of them but OH MY GOD how do I do it?

I have DivX 5.02 Pro but I need to know what is a popular and easy application to encode them. As I say, I just want an easy way to convert a DVD into a VCD.

ENLIGHTEN ME, PEOPLE!

Thanks. :)

I created a VCD the other day actually, and was surprised at the quality.
It's actually much better than I expected, although nothing beats a good divx :|

Gah! Loads!

DivX is about the best quality I can get, right? If so, I need to rip my DVD to DivX format, then somehow get it in VCD format without losing the quality. Right?

I'm confused. :(

So you cant rip DVD directly to a VCD then?

It seems like you can, but they're not as good quality as the DVD > DivX > VCD route.

Although I could have misunderstood everything. :(

ive not done any ripping or vcd making personally, but i think dvd --> divx using dvdx tat bids said then, split the audio and video using audiodub, save audio it as a wav, use tmpEnc to put the two together again as a mpeg and then burn away with vcd easy.

but then i may just be talking shit :)

www.doom9.net

and kez is right, it takes aeons, even on a fast machine.

btw, why backup dvd's to vcd? you're sacrificing 99% of the quality :/

Ripping Vob (DVD format) to DivX, then converting to VCD is tres stupido. You're converting from one format, to another (lossy) format, then onto another lossy format, why waste the vast ammount of time it'll take just to do a pointless intermediary step.

If you care about quality you'll prolly be wanting to aim for SVCDs, 2 for a movie is best, but you can get away with 1 depending on the length of said film.

I can write you up a little guide for ripping DVDs to SVCD but I'm not sure if I should do it here

As already mentioned, vcdhelp.com is a great site for making VCDs etc.

As you're concerned about quality, its best to backup to SVCD on 2 discs. For a nice guide on how to do this, visit http://www.vcdhelp.com/sefy/

I 'backed up' the LotR DVD, and the three hour film took eight hours to rip.

Bah.

Nice quality though :)

Scooba is completely right, although I'd like to see a full length film (ie 90+mins) with watchable quality on a single SVCD. :)

And cage is right too, doom9.net or .org is the best site I ever visited.

And if you're doing the DiVX, you might be interested in trying out the XViD codec. Basically you can achieve much better quality on the same film on 1 disc with XViD than DiVX.

Yeah, that's it.

And the DiVX/SVCD quality argument has been going on for ages.

I looked into DVD ripping a few months back, I ended up moving the DVD/CDRW onto a separate machine, it can take all year to rip now, I can play on the main machine.
