Yup, my flat is £1200 a year. A flat. I get a single occupant discount, but its still fucking expensive, and largely a waste of money. The bins and my local park are about the bits I use. Even the streetlights near me are rubbish. I suppose the bit that pays for plod has a benefit. No council tax when I go to Dublin, you pay for rubbish collection on a PAYG basis.

Your 'only open 5cm's' obsession is puzzling me. Are the binmen meant to carry a guage around with them to assess if the lid is open beyond some pre determined safe limit? The safe limit is clearly that the lid must be shut, from what Sar says, and you must have been living on a different planet not to see a bunch of news stories lately about this very same issue.

I think it's quite reasonable for them to refuse to take a bin with the lid ajar, they have to know where the line is to be drawn and what would be simpler than lid closed = empty it, lid ajar = don't empty it?

For what it's worth we have a great relationship with our binmen. A decent tip at Christmas helps, as does sending the Mrs. out in a skimpy robe to ask if they wouldn't mind taking that extra cardboard away....

Hey! Aren't binmen all great! They can do no wrong!

All I have to do is give them free money at christmas and whore out my wife on occasion to them...
