Why are you sick of it?

Only the guilty would feel that way tbh?

And it's about child pornography - not terrorism?

I'm sick of the big brother thing also though...because of kiddie fidlers and bombjohns around the world you can't even be a porn watching wanker anymore without uncle sammy knowing about it.

Gods above bless scandinavia...this blessed haven of freedom.

For once, I agree with you. It's unnaceptable for governments to invade personal privacy in the name of the "war against terror", which isn't as much a war as it is a ploy to remain in power. Bush and Blair are a pair of asshats.
And Blair is really pushing this ridiculous waste of money, time and effort that is the "ID-Card".

Edit: response to Bugz

It's not that I'm guilty. Far from it. I just don't think it is justifiable and makes Big Brother a more 'real' thing. The last thing someone like you needs Bugz is a letter to the homeowner detailing all the filth you've looked at ;)

They say it's about child pornography..but the FBI also said during the meetings that such records would help their terrorism investigations..

And a while back the British leadership (lack of a better word...) was talking about ISPs logging all e-mails and websites visited in the name of the "war against terror"

More bollocks from Joor

Whats next I wonder?

That the centre of the earth is made of cheese?

Or maybe The moon is really a cardboard cutout?

Or maybe even EA games are a big friendly happy company who respects games/genres they buy into and treats the customers with the same respect?

No, it's not the first time. The cynic in me doubts it will be the last.

And all the irresponsible journalism does not help the situation at all. "Help the War on Terror and baselessly accuse a Muslim of terrorism today!"

All that matters is that the American law enforcement agencies have no jurisdiction in the U.K. so they can't do shit. Not a judge in the land would allow extradition to the U.S. on alleged copyright infringement or anything else so minor, there are just too many loop holes legal grey areas for something like to happen on such a minor charge. Now if I commited a serious crime then it could well happen but if I had commited something that serious I wouldn't expect anything else.

The moment you use a PC for anything your fucked anyway - they can always get a warrant and take it and retrieve data from it....If you have nothing to hide why worry.....Or do we have a few Mr Glitters on here ?

If I could see into the future, and could tell with absolute certainty that a law letting the government tap any line of communication they wanted in their investigations would stop a terrorist attack that killed 10 thousand innocent people, I would still vote against such a law 100 times out of a 100.

Of course, the very next thing I'd do would be to tell the police about the attack I saw in the future, but that's beside the point. :p

Lets be realistic here. If the government or police wants to look inside your PC, then they'll look inside your PC, whether you've got privacy laws or not. What ya gonna do ? If you complain then it looks more like you've got something to hide than relying on your constitutional rights, even though you very well may be doing just that. People will always suspect the worst when someone's jittery about images on PCs these days.

Oh and BTW the government ARE listening into private conversations - every minute of every day. Ever heard of GCHQ ?

Saying only the guilty have things to hide is a load of crap tbh, I have chats with friends about very personal stuff, non of which is illegal. This is stuff that I'm only comfortable about a very few people knowing, and I would hate to have some guy or girl in an office somewhere reading it in the name of the government, and their next law to remove our civil liberties.

I'd be happy if the ISP only logged websites visited, but your emails were left unchecked. The only reason for this is so we can rid the web of all the truely evil websites currently available (i.e. the logging acts as a deterent, not only just to catch those doing illegal things). It would force people to take responsibility for the things they look at on the web - since really you can be anonymous in the world just now.

But anything to do with conversations, email or messengers, that should be left alone, treated in the same way as a personal conversation. Privacy is important in this age, but I feel logging websites visited would make the world a safer place

Thad, I get the feeling you've been burned by EA's treatment of BF2?

GCHQ are massively underfunded and understaffed as any member or fomer member of the secret services will tell you. They just don't have the resources or personel to conduct that kind of surviellance on the entire nation, they are being streched to breaking point just monitoring a couple of thousand people in these islands who are suspected of being involved or supporting terrorism. However it is much more likely that the United States intelligence agencies are performaning random monitoring of civilian communications worldwide. They have a bigger annual budget than the entire British National Health service of which more than half of it is spent on equipment and research/development into comms interception along with automated keyphrase pickup.

The intelligence agencies from the 'land of the free' are a much bigger threat to freedom than any other force on the planet. They use the mandate to protect American freedom to invade the privacy of thier own citizens even though it is constitutionally illegal, if they can do that to thier own people imagine what they are like when the reigns are off when it comes to foreign citizens?

No.
It´s everybodys goddamn right to have a privacy sphere and anonymity if that´s his choice. Logging ISP data is a violation of your basic rights, because it´s an act against the presumption of innocence. The executive authority has a right to start investigations as soon as BUT NOT BEFORE they´re suspecting criminal behaivour. Prophylaxis can never be a reason.

About the "only the guilty have something to hide"... lets take it to the extreme. If the government decides to "park" a soldier right in your house 24/7 who´s constantly watching you and taking notes of what you´re doing and when.. would you still say "Let him, I don´t have anything to hide?"
It´s not about having something to hide, it´s about other people intruding your personal space and removing your basic rights in the name of "fighting evil". We´ve had similar things about 60 years ago over here.

I believe everyone has a right to privacy, but I dont believe people should be monitored if they visit certain websites. I dont think the ISP should take the view of "Lets log everything", but I believe they should log people when they access certain sites - such as child porn. And like I said, do this as a deterent - not as a way of being "Big Brother". Maybe I feel like this because I dont believe having anonymity on the internet is a good thing.

As for bit-torrents... you wouldnt be charged if you are downloading legally ;)

And who should have control over internet respectively the lack of anonymity? Are you really trusting your government enough to grant them access to your private data whenever they feel like it? I sure know that I don´t.
