And how have we changed that? It's certainly not much better and has spilled over into the entire region.

Afghanistan is a right bugger of a country to move around in and find the enemy, the Russians found out the hard way and so now have the US and allies.

Short of rounding up all the evil fucks and putting a bullet in the back of their head* there isn't a great deal we can do about it. The region is chock-full of religious loons. Even the moderates are completely bonkers.

*which doesn't work anyway, another fucker pops up almost immediately.
The situation for many Afghans is now undoubtedly better than it was and will regress when the Taliban take over again.

The situation was already spilling over. That's what Al Qaeda were training to do in their enclaves.

You are correct that it is virtually impossible to win a war in Afghanistan. The US leaving won't end it though. It will escalate.

The entire region's instability is caused by so many factors, most of them are nothing to do with the US invasion of Afghanistan. There's also just from the top of my head:
  • The ongoing proxy wars between Iran and Saudi.
  • The funding of terror groups by many Arab states.
  • The funding and support of terror groups by Russia.
  • The demands for freedom of people under dictatorships (like Syria) for freedom, being met with brutal crackdowns and the excuse that gave to everyone else in the region to get involved.
  • Palestine obvs.
I could name dozens more if arsed. If 2001 never happened the region would not be stable now.

Bit of a Team America evaluation?

Ultimately we need the UN to grow a pair and start doing stuff that it was built to do, if Russia and China wanna play proxy wars and make the UN redundant then we get rid.

Obviously it's pretty important that we don't turn the UN into a NATO MK. 2.

Opium production is bad for the rest of the world. Not so much Afghanistan. And I certainly never said the place was great now.

And the problem with NATO is?

NATO is a anti-Russian organisation, the UN can't be that, it has to stand for something, and as I said before, if countries don't like what it stands for then they can do one.

They should stand for one simple thing; democracy. If Afghanistan wants to elect in the Taliban, then they should be allowed, but then it should be down to the UN to make sure the only fuckery they get up to is within their borders, and intervention if anyone tries to fuck with said democracy.

I realise that the concept of democracy is quite a western and therefore NATO thing too, but so long as it involves the self-determination of all nations then I don't see the issue.

It's pretty clear that trying to preach liberal democracies to countries that seem to be desiring it isn't working.

The Taliban was never elected. People used to flee them and will again.

It's funny seeing the GOP implode though, I wish the Tories would here, instead of Labour.

"What are the consequences for traitors who meddled with our sacred democratic process and tried to steal power by taking away the voices of the American people?"

He's talking about Trump doing all he could to cripple the USPS and prevent people voting by mail, right?

If only. People should be executed for things that happened in my mind is the actual message.

Just like the people who identify most vehemently strongly against porn on the internet are the highest actual porn-subscriber group.
