I was really surprised at the 2 Golden Globes the show and Gervais won.

Considering I think it's only been shown across there on BBC America or something.

I do think that it may need a remake in order to appeal to American office humour. As I can't really see the Yanks 'getting' a lot of the British office jokes.

But who knows - you can't beat the original :(

I don't think that remaking it is necessary, but I also think assuming it won't work is short-sighted, small-minded and overly patriotic - exactly the kind of stupid things I slate the yanks for.

I love our version, but let's face it - the Americans undeniably write better TV than us these days in the vast majority of occasions. Just saying "Yah boo, this'll suck" doesn't make it so!

Personally, the only American TV proggys I truely like are The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, ummmm and thats it. I'm not a big fan of Friends or anything like that.

Christ how small-minded is that? :p American TV doesn't mean "Friends and Buffy". I hate Friends, but unfortunately for your argument America has dozens of supremely well-written shows that are much much better than 99.9% of our shitty output of the last few years. What have we done that was so good recently? The Second Coming, The Office, Phoenix Nights, Spaced, errr...?

Steve Carell was good in Bruce Almighty.

As much as I hate to say it, the Americans have been writing more good stuff than the Brits have recently. I hate the typical american sit-coms by the way, and I also doubt The Office will convert well.

What makes American comedy so good is that basically they lock 20 people in a room, and don't let them out until they've got some funny material.

Here, we get Carla Lane to do it.

For the most part, comedy died in this country when Blackadder ended :(

If they do, do this then I hope it's a rewrite and not the same scripts as over here.

Anyone that has seen the pilot episode of the American Red Dwarf will know what I'm on about.

Well, i'm sorry but friends is a work of genius. 10 seasons in and they still make me cry with laughter every time. No mean feat I tell thee.

But The office without irony is like freddyshouse without the CoC.

There is no way that this will translate well and appeal to anyone other than the yanks. I don't doubt they will make it funny, just not in the way we brits would like.

Christ how stupid are you ?
;)

et al means like err, etc . I could have given you an enormous list of generic US programming, but I didnt want to make my head hurt .

Even US programmes I do like, say the Sopranos, are quite lacking in depth imho.
But you was speaking of humour :/ Im sorry , and I know some people like it, but to me the only word to describe friends is vacuous. I cant think of another good US sitcom either. I can occasionally laugh at the Simpsons if I see it I suppose. What else ? Frasier ? better that some , but not something i really like Im afriad.

You may not like Buffy (fair enough) but the argument that it was generic just doesn't exist, I'm sorry :p. Remember it started not long off ten years ago - it may be generic now but only when placed among the dozen or so copycat shows that followed it. An episode almost completely without dialogue, generic?

Buffy throws you off at almost every line, dashes every preconception and plays with every convention. I know it's a stupid sounding show with a silly sounding premise but that's part of the joke, you see?

I am determined that this doesn't turn into another "Buffy is shit! Buffy is great!" thread like they always seem to when I'm around, so I'll leave it now!

The West Wing is was quite good, but since it lost its creator is becoming too dramatic

West Wing was good when you could watch it

Channel 4 kept on fucking about with the time it was shown!

I originally held off watching Buffy because it seemed stupid, and the BBC advertising did it no favours. The first few series are actually very good, although it lost the plot afterwards. Then it was bollocks :/

Only decent comedy show to come out of America recently is Scrubs in my opinion.
