You can't create something from nothing. All you can do is sharpen edges and increase contrast.

Just download HD stuff from the internet and watch that :) HD Battlestar Galactica FTW!

tom my friend, as a cameraman yourself maybe you can shed some light on this,i believe sky only record programs in sd and upscale the picture to hd subscribers?

i could however be barking up the wrong tree again :)

You can't polish a turd scooby my friend.

Once you have seen HD football you will never want to watch it in SD again, gods honest truth.

Well I can categorically promise you that all Sky Sports HD material is sourced on HD lenses mounted on HD cameras fed into a HD outside broadcast truck recording onto a HD format and uplinked in HD to wherever it goes. I was at the Utd-Arse game yesterday, its all top-quality equipment.

I believe its a mixture, some of the stuff they show is true hd, some upscaled.

According to AV forums a lot of Sky One HD is upscaled, pressing the info on your remote tells you if it's true HD or not.

..but your TV will be upscaling it anyway? Otherwise, it would be a small picture in the middle of the screen. Your TV will scale the signal to the resolution of the panel, and unless (according to my research) you invest in a good quality video processor, you'd be wasting your time and money. To quote:

I tried a cheap upscaler - check out my blog for more info - and found it was much worse at upscaling than my LG tv - however I've recently got a PS3 and it really does make a difference!

It also comes down to which device has more sophisticated scaling circuitry and video processing. My Onkyo amp does a damn site better job of deinterlacing than my projector does, so I allow the Onkyo to convert the interlaced picture to progressive and let the projector do the scaling and it's a massive improvement over a raw interlaced signal from the Freeview box.

I disagree Trem; deinterlacing the picture using a quality video processor can certainly tidy up the picture a lot.

Edit: to answer the original question, yes you can upscale it. Just don't do it on the cheap. The following gets a good thumbs up at a great price.

Audiovision - Home Automation, Home Theatre, Multiroom, CD/DVD servers, Hifi Separates, Speakers, Custom Install

What Big G said - your TV is already upscaling any SD source you feed into it. The quality of that upscaling depends on whether you bought your HDTV from Asda or not.
