Upload speed.

I am currently with Plusnet for my broadband services. They seem ok and now that the bt lines have been upgraded in my area my internet access seems very reliable. Only thing is I am running a home server. Perfect really for messing around with website designing etc but there is one big drawback as far as I am concerned and this is the upload speed (not sure what this is really but it could be ftp upload speed infact). As I am moving more towards guitar playing and creating video files the ability to stream media is becoming more important. Hopeless on a home server setup as Plusnet's broadband upload speed is lowered considerably during the day to a crawl really and no-way can I stream video of any sort. This upload speed is also the speed of file download off my computer (confusing for sure). The best I have seen is about 30 Kbs. Should more than one person attempt to download at the same time the speed is lowered accordingly for each one. This upload speed isn't really something a lot of internet providers give much info about. I have been considering moving over to Sky but again I can't really find much info about this upload speed. Only other thing of course is to pay for hosting which I have been doing but if there is a provider out there where I can run a home server setup (which I prefer) I could save quite a bit of money. Anyone know more about this upload speed I am talking about and can name some good broadband providers?

Generally speaking, all UK based home broadband providers give absolutely appalling upload speeds. What you'll have is 256kbps upload - that's bits not bytes which is 32kilobytes. The only ones I've seen with much better uploads are LLU providers that offer an all round much faster service. That said - I'm on UKOnline 24mbit downstream, and even then they only offer 768k up which works out at almost 100k up *max* so really not very good for a home server set up. I'd suggest pursuing the hosted service option - it's really the only viable one.

I'm with Be* and they offer 1.3mbps upload currently. Afaik they're due to introduce a 2.5mbps upload speed for business customers and are considering whether or not to introduce a similar service for home users.
