I’ve always bought unlocked phones so have no experience but my uncle has donated an iPhone 5 to my mum and it’s locked to EE. How does one normally do it and how much for? Where isn’t dodgy?

Try EE themselves. If it's out of contract they should unlock it for you.

From that website:
Can I unlock a second-hand device?
As long as the second-hand device is more than six months old and has not been reported lost or stolen then we can unlock it for £8.99.

If you're calling from an EE device:
  1. call 150 and speak to Customer Services
If you’re calling from a landline or non-EE phone:
  1. call 0800 956 6000 (select option 2, then option 4)

  2. we'll run a security check before we give you unlocking instructions
Second-hand devices connected to corporate accounts are not eligible for unlock. To raise an unlocking request for a corporate device, contact your account manager.

:ROFLMAO: Try vodaphone then. they will also have the same unlock process.
Dudes in phone shops can usually do it.

i went on a website when voda refused to unlock mine. Cost me 30quid. I know prob ripped off but it got unlocked. Cantremember which sitetho sorry.

why did ee say they wouldnt unlock it?
voda was cause my company told them not to. Even tho once out of the 2 year contract the hand set was ours.

You could get an EE PAYG sim card. Register on their website and then after a month get the NUC code online.
Might be better going into an Actual EE shop though.
