Well, some of my friends started last week and I'm off up to Manc to go to UMIST to do Computation for 4 years.

They've cocked up the accommodation though, which means Sunday will be lots of fun finding out where I'm going to be living...

I detract...

Who else is starting Uni over the next few weeks, where're you going, what you're studying, credit card details, and whether I get to meet you or not :D

I've applied, and been accepted doing a course that is basically what I work as at the moment, I doubt I shall be attending any lectures tho.

Gimme that loan!

PS anyone know the exact ruling on tax as a student?

Tax as a student

Scooba
As far as I remember from my shadowy days working from the Inland Revenue (and before you all start I have done nothing but get everyone tax rebates since I left in '88) Everyone, when they are born (think rich kids with trusts accumulating interest- yes I've seem tax forms relating to 3 year olds!), get their personal allowances which for this year are 4619. this enables you to work and earn £88.00 per week. (NIC level is lower) If you go over that you are liable to tax. I'm afraid I cannot answer regarding loans, grants (do they do them any more?) and whether they're taxable or not.
Hope this helps.
If you have a specific scenario you want answering then send me details.

Bah, I thought that as a student you weren't charged taxed. I was looking forward to my pay packet getting back to a healthy size.

I confirm this, my wife retired thru ill health and has a small pension, ther personal allowance applies there also, it's pretty much a blanket thing nowdays.

You dont pay any unless you earn more than something like £4000, thing is if u earn money i beleive they auto deduct it, then you ahve to go back and claim it off them. Loans arent counted as earning either.

Capitol Gains Tax is the only other one 2 worry about, if you "gain" more than 7k in profits from an investment or as a gift then you pay tax on it - although family can be nice in supporting you, i very much doubt they gona give you that much ;p

That's SAS country. I'd watch your step if I was you. Oh and avoid Union Street on a saturday night. Well, unless you're really after that one-legged lady of the night.

Univeristy?

It really is easier to get into university now then ever before, you don't even have to be able to spell the damn thing.

Should be starting my final year at "the Poly" (otherwise known as manc metropolitan).

You been in manc much? It's kinda cool for students but since I live here its not quite the same :(

Even so, I've not actually managed to get to a freshers week yet! and I don't think this year is going to be any different!!
