I don't see the point unless you spend your entire life downloading shit that you'll use once and burn.

oh...right.

I agree,

Although it frustrates me when I can't download warez and porn quickly.

Wait a minute.......

Got free upgrade from 2m to 4m with BY but I intend to downgrade again as I have no wish or need to download so much crap that it would require such a speed.

This is a fair point. I have 2mb adsl, and I hardly ever download much with it. And when I do, I still think wow thats fast anyway :)
The only reason I could possibly want it is for the faster upload, arguably making my ping in games lower, but its not really necessary as everyone elses pings are the same , and the games I play arn't
anyway :)

It won't affect your ping in the slightest, the latency will be the same, just more bandwidth. It could indirectly by reducing bottlenecks if you had any due to uploads, but it's unlikely.

(Luckily throd is very, very old, and his failing eyes can't read this bit where I state that I am in fact right and he is a doddering cockney)

Doesn't the bandwidth affect ping a little bit? 56k vs ADSL ping sort of thing? I just ordered another Bulldog line, then I can get rid of Bulldog on my BT line, then I can get UK Online, then I can cancel my second Bulldog line.

56K vs ADSL is like 2-4KB/s vs 28-30KB/s. In those terms, yes, it does matter, as it affects the maximum size of packet and rate ingame. If the server is trying to send more than you can receive, then it'll appear jerky and laggy.

But in the example of something like CS:S, when you're talking about an outgoing rate of something like 8-12 KB/s, going from 30 to 45-50 KB/s isn't going to make a blind bit of difference.

Moving to Bulldogs LLU options is different again though, as anyone coming from normal ADSL (ie a BT Wholesale home connection) is going from a 50:1 contention to a 20:1 one. At peak times this can account for some of the lag.

... but then Babs's advice was to wedge a pasty into your adsl router, so I wouldnt pay too much attention if I were you ...

I was all set to upgrade to 22MB also Nath, then I saw the router catch.... :p
Contemplating waiting a couple of weeks to see if they remove the cost, then I can shop around for ADSL2+ routers at least, my estimated speed is only 12.5MB as well. So not sure what to do!

If it helps, the router is damn good. It's a Netgear 4port 108mbps wireless jobby. I had a look around and 80 quid seems like a very reasonable price for it - couldn't find the same one anywhere but a similar D-Link model was about 90 quid from ebuyer.

As for the speed, the website said I'd get 16.5 and I'm getting 20 so you could get much faster.
