The thing is you have to create the array and this destroys all the data then on restarting a format is required.

The problem with a RAID 0 (Striping) is, as you suggest, if one drive fails it all goes down. This is why I have two drives in the array and then a spare that I shift important backup data too. RAID 0+1 is a combination of Striping and Mirroring but the mirror costs you 50% of the space although it gives you that extra safety net.

Yes get a better controller.

hmmm, but then i saw an option in disk management to upgrade my disks to dynamic disks... this is from the ms knowledgebase... is this the windows way of dealing with RAID or is it the same thing with an ms name?

hmm, if you had 4 hard drives on one 2 channel controller, and you wanted to stripe 2 of them, would you put them as a master on each channel? this is what i'm now thinking of doing... i can rearrange data just about perfectly in order to completely free up 2 disks. i don't even want to think about backing up the other 120gb :(

In the RAID controller menu you are normally given the option as to which drives you want to use to create the array so you should be all right doing that although you could just shift the other two drives to using the onboard.

What is this data?

Would any normal person really need 240gb of storage? I've got 40gb, and that does me fine.

well, my solution to formatting/backing up thus far has been to buy more hard disks. this has been going for about 18 months. it's mainly installs, mp3s, backups, drivers for long since sold/broken hardware. it all adds up :(

it gets defragged occasionally and i have win2k on a 6gb partition of it's own. but i've decided to do something about it before it gets out of hand. :)

good site for learning about RAID btw, it helped me out quite considerably a while ago :)

Well use two of them on the RAID controller and throw the other two on the onboard controller. Set the two on the RAID as striping and away you go :)

Oh and sort any junk out and bin it ;)

argh no can do :(

IDE1 on mobo = 25.4gb hd and zip drive
IDE2 on mobo = dvdrom and cdwriter

hmm, unless i moved the cdroms onto the RAID card...

25gb because i haven't managed to shift it yet
ZIP drive because it's the only way i have of transferring files over 1.44mb from uni to home and vice versa since i got kicked out of halls

Right remove the two you want to keep off the cable, then create the RAID using the two still connected....this is just so you don't select the ones you want to keep by mistake ;)

After the OS is installed just reconnect the other 2 drives again.....when installing windows 2k/xp you'll need a floppy so it can recognise the RAID controller and thus the drives. Once it's started to boot into the setup(First time you boot off CD) screen you'll see a little message in the white bar at the bottom of the screen telling you to press F6 for RAIDS.

lol,

hardly cheap, the recent prices are getting too close for comfort. Thus the reason why I could only afford a 1600. The last time I looked the price gap for an AMD 1900 and P4 1900 was only £30!!

That was a while ago though.

I only have an old chip cos all I do is use IRC and play MP3's.

At least I don't buy a cheapo shitty chip and claim it to be "ultimate".

the kr7a-raid is one of the best boards i have ever seen. it has received stunning reviews on every tech site i've seen it. it is DEFINITELY the board i would go with if i was going to upgrade cpu/motherboard at the moment.
