UK Set to get 20mb+ BB <o/

Couple of news articles on one of my regular haunts about 20+meg BB.

NTL and Telewest announced 10meg broadband for customers, but now the LLU ADSL prodivers are touting 20meg+ services, I assume using the ASDL2+ standerd. It's about time we got out of the dark ages regarding internet connections.

Not very technically minded so could be on wrong track here.

I looked into upgrading not long ago but was told that my phone line would only support upto 1mb didn't see the point upgrading.

From this I don't suspect going to 20mb is worth it if BT can't sort their stupid phone lines out to cope with higher than 1mb.

Anyone else know of this problem?

i think (correct me if im wrong, im not very technically minded either ) that they have to upgrade the exchanges, in most cases they cant handle more than 4mb? (which is why bulldog etc only offer within a couple of km of the exchange or its too much work for them? )

not 100% on that though, just been told we cant get higher than 4mb here unless BT starts upgrading

ok I am far from an expert, however speed restrictions are normally based on how far your phone point is from the exchange..the further away the more interferance your line picks up thus the lower stability of the line and hence the lower supported speed.

Correct basically its the length of the copper cable in your connection. In most cases that's from house to the Exchange. The limit used to be 2-3 miles but with the new ADSL standards its around 5 miles. At least that's what our telecoms guys says and he used to work for BT.

You can get up to 8mb on ADSL, but your line has to be short and noise free, there is new technology in the pipeline for much higher speeds over ordinary lines, but TBH city wide wi-fi is probably going to be the next big thing

The current lines that have been laid have no real limit when it comes to speed. It's really the exchange which determines how fast you can go. Some ISP's are doing 8mb in certain areas, but you need to be near your exchange and need to have a decent ish line (as someone else said). ADSL2 will go as high as ~24 meg as far as im aware.

NTL/Telewests current lines will support upto adsl2 speeds aswell, however i dont know if the lines are fast enough to support beyond adsl2, i just know they will support upto 24.

Be weary of isps which currently offer 8mb though, bulldog for instance, have REALLY REALLY poor service and crap hidden in the smallprint.

It's best to stick with a decent 2mb connection and upgrade when adsl2 is released.

We just need to catch up on japan, they have gigabit internet connections (however, with a really high contention ratio)

I've just gone with Bulldog on 8mb,fastest I've seen is 6.6mb,but normally averages 4.4mb nice and steady.
We are about 80 metres from the exchange so I assume is must be the quallity of the BT phone-line.

BT phone lines have no real limits as i said. I've not met a single bulldog user to get 8mb. Goes to say quite a bit really, considering i work, or did work, in the industry.

I'm synced at 7584 Kbps with around 830Kb/s download speed. I was synced at 8Meg, but it was slightly unstable (although it could well have been my router cause it was shit) so I asked them to reduce it slightly.
Bulldog have brilliant customer service now. It was only a few months back when they had problems, new people have been brought in to sort stuff out and it's all ok.

Of course theres going to be problems, they're trying to get the max out of your line.. but I certainly wouldn't have liked to stick on 2Mb. As far as im concerned Bulldog are the best ISP i've been with out of:
Wandoo/Freeserve
BT
Freedom2surf
Central Point
Pipex
and some other one I can't remember name of.

NTL/Telewest can support up to like 50Mbps, but they're lazy and won't do it.

ps. I live just over 1Km from the exchange to get 7Mb from Bulldog.. I expect those under 1Km with good lines can get 8Mb

You can make your line as fast as you want, but surely your still going to be no better off then anyone else as you can still only download pages as fast as the sites server, and you'll still be as laggy in game if GOA can't give you the service any faster.
