I want to keep off the national security radar, so i won't be able to provide you with an answer on firearm transportation :D

I would assume the recipient would require a permit for the weapon, no matter what. Best way would be to ask the post office.

Though that might bleep on the anti-terrorism peeps radar :D

Transporting shotguns
When transporting shotguns

•Always keep your shotgun in its case or cover whilst transporting it.
•Never transport a loaded shotgun.
•If staying away from home overnight, your shotgun should be stored preferably with a registered firearms dealer or in a secure cabinet of another certificate holder.
•If it is necessary to leave your shotgun in a vehicle, it must be stored out of sight preferably in a locked boot. Consideration should be given as to removing the bolt, trigger and/or fore-end of the shotgun, and always ensure that you lock the vehicle securely.
•If it is necessary to leave the shotgun in a vehicle on regular occasions, consider having a lockable metal storage case secured to the structure of the vehicle.

Spookily strange, but I believe TNT have a licence for such things, they certainly can transport explosive

All firearms are registered to a specific person. (Or should be ...) So, if it's your shotgun you want to move, you should either move it yourself, in your car or whatever, or you can loan it to another shotgun certificate holder for up to 72 hours for them to move it, or you can use a courier, as someone has said I think it's TNT that do it. It's not an option I would choose though.

A shotgun certificate lasts for 5 years. It's not too hard to get, you apply, then get a interview by the fireamrs dept. You have to have an apporoved safe to keep the gun in. It costs £50.00 for the application.

Hope this helps :)

Throd,

Can you recommend some guns? Good started shotties, clay pigeon etc...

Best start would probably be to visit your local clay pigeon venue, they'll probably run a few taster days, or beginners instruction, good place to pick up the basics. To obtain a license you need to have a reason to obtain it. This can be because you're a member of the local clay club, or a local farmer has given you permission to shoot his fields etc. You can't get a license because you think guns are shiny.

You don't need a reason to own a shotgun licence, this is wrong. The police have to show reason why you can't have one. It's the other way around for rifles though. You CAN get a gun because they are shiney, just don't tell the policeman that! Just say you want to shoot clays, enough.

You can have a double barrelled shotgun, or a semi auto, or a pump action, with a maximum of 3 shells, i.e 2 in magazine plus one in chamber. It depends what grabs you. An over/under is the most acceptable kind for clay pigeons but semi-autos are getting more and more popular every day. I like pump actions, but they are much harder for clays, as clays are fired either in pairs on one after the other very quickly, and of course with a pump you have to re chamber after each shot. I'll see what else I can think of when I get home from work :)

Yes, I suppose the law is that way around, but it's certainly a question you'll be asked, I certainly was 10 years or so ago when I last held a license. In fact I was asked to provide a telephone number for the farmer I had named and was told that this would be checked. Might have just been an over zealous firearms officer I suppose.

At the time I had my fathers Darlow side by side 12bore which was his fathers before that, and a Remington 12bore semi which was ace fun, but still frowned on at my local clay place back then.

I'd love to get back into it, but simply don't have the time. When I moved out from my Ma's place I signed dads old gun over to her neighbour who is still holding it for us for when I get around to it again. I moved back out to the countryside in the middle of September, and by the look of things, whilst Gumbo was away, the pigeons have played, so I may have to set to thinning them out again.

I suppose if you have land big enough. You need to be aware that these aren't air rifles, they can make big holes in things, and the old adage of what goes up must come down.

It's complicated, depends how the force in your area administrates things.

I got as far as stage 3 of the recruitment process but failed by 1% in a county where the pass rate is 10% higher than every other county bar one :(

I used regularly drive across the the M4 and M5 with a rifle on my passenger seat, nobody seemed to bother me :)

I also stood in a crowded area once with a loaded rifle, again nobody seemed to care.

Then there was the time I had a rifle with bayonet on the streets of Stoke on Trent, I was looking for Trem :)
