After the tax of 17.5 % gets added the mark up they make is still nothing compared to what they lose on the blu ray drives. Also i do not see this as treating the UK market like shit they delayed release to make sure there were enough consoles for people to buy. It also sounds like we will get a better version of the console with scaling included and backward compatibility issues sorted plus who knows what else will be fixed by march.

Most American states have sales tax so you have to factor that in as well, also remember the pound was not as strong against the dollar at the time the 360 launched so there is another couple of percent, the RRP hasn't dropped but retailers have been selling the console for an average of £25 under RRP these last few months because the wholesale price dropped. Yes Microsoft were dearer in the UK than the US on the 360 but almost all the markup is down to VAT, something you cannot say with the PS3 as $600 -> $847 is a damn sight more than the VAT markup.

Your sums seem off, $200 is 33% of $600 right? So surely $247 is more than 33%? That is the premium we are paying over the US.

Frankly they have a fucking cheek to be asking more than £399, I don't care what precedents have been set in the past, them asking more than £399 is a fucking joke, they are price gouging us.

People have a simple choice now when it comes to a gaming platform, a premium 360 for £250 if you look around or £425 for the 60gb PS3 and that is BEFORE you buy the official HDMI cable.

I would still like to see some one get a media center pc with a blu ray player for under £425.
Or set up a same spec 360 for that price. I know you do not need that on the 360 but for compare them fairly you need to think about it.

Like i said my maths could be off i just did the devide the top price by 100 then times the difference by that. So its on the total price not the price befor adding our extra.

But anything you buy here costs more than the same thing in america it always has and always will i do not think its right that it dose cost more but i think using it as another reason to bitch and moan about the PS3 is stupid if im honest as the Wii is just as bad.

Then you did it arse about face bud ;) 600 is the base price, 847 is the UK price so 247 is the markup. You need to work out 247 as a percentage of 600 to get the real markup. Way beyond VAT, currency fluctuation or anything else that comes to mind.

Little update now, the PS3 comes with practically no extras, you have to pay for these ontop of the £425 ;

Remote Control (Microsoft gave these away free with the premium at launch) - £17.99

Official HDMI Cable - £17.99

Wireless Pad (60gb console ships with one) - £34.99

S-Video Cable - £12.99

Not slagging this off as those prices are close to what MS charge, just making a point about you having to spend another £36 if you want the remote for watching Blu-Ray movies via your HDMI. All that before you even buy a game. Ouch, way too expensive for me anytime soon. :(

Yeah i know that i decided to do it the other way by getting the uk price in dollars then finding the difference between uk and us and then finding the percent that the mark up is it made for some good results too.

The prices are not too bad but i do not think you will need the remote like you don't for the ps2 if you do its crazy. its like a role reversal xbox you had to buy remote to access dvds ps2 you did not know the other way around :)

I will be using my gold plated jvc hdmi cable of god so that dose not worry me :)

No? Ok I will do it for you...

PS3 US price : $599
PS3 UK price : $847
Price difference : $247
Percentage markup on UK unit from US unit : 41%

Ok, now to be fair...

360 US price : $399
360 UK price : $551
Price difference : $152
Percentage markup on UK unit from US unit : 38%

Not too much difference BUT that is with todays currency market value, not that of November 2005.

Ok, now here is the kicker...

360 US price : $399
360 actual UK street price : $492
Price difference : $93
Percentage markup on UK unit from US unit : 23%

Now, take 17.5% VAT and we are talking less than a 6% premium. The problem is Microsoft cut the wholesale price and not the retail price, they gave the retailer greater margains to play with so they had the option of price cuts. In my opinion the 360 is still £20 overpriced but hopefully that changes in March anyway. It is a damn sight different from the 23.5% EXTRA Sony are making AFTER VAT is removed from the equation.

Don't forget, Microsoft gave away free remote controls and headsets at launch as well and did so for the first 6 months of release. A further saving that I won't even bother to factor in.

Ok but they are still close ;)

Difference devided by start price times 100

ps3
237 / 600 * 100 = 39.5

360
150 / 399 * 100 = 37.5

Wii
103 / 249 * 100 = 41

So nintendo are still the biggest fuckers ;)

Can i stop doing maths now?

My numbers are from release off all 3 consols according to todays yahoo convertor

How are 6% and 23.5% markup after VAT is taken out of the equation and current street prices factored in anywhere near close?

Are you wearing those rose tinted SONY sunglasses again Mr Soze? ;) :p :D

Microsoft marking a nice profit on 360 hardware now, EU is due at least a 6% price cut to fall in line with rest of the world pricing. Expect further price cuts in October when 65nm CPU/GPU production is up and running at 100% capacity thus affording Microsoft even greater margains to play with.

Yes you are, the man on the street will be paying current prices when he makes his choice and you have to take that into consideration. Microsoft dropped the wholesale price for exactly this reason, they knew they were overpriced but didn't want to cut the RRP until they get past the 18 month since launch line.

Nope, J Allard stated it in an interview just before the big CES show recently. No new console until at least 2010 and possibly longer, that won't be decided till Summer 2008 at the very earliest.

Untill we see if the PS3 dose the same it would not be fair to compare launch to current imo. Even more so as the 360 launch was the same :)

Wise choice. Personally if I was thinking of buying now I would wait for the CPU/GPU shrink (cooler quieter console) anyway because I have a feeling that they will either cut the price significantly or ship with a much bigger hard drive at the current price. Either way I fully expect 2 price drops this year, March being the smaller. It may not even be a RRP cut but a further wholesale cut so retailers can discount as they see fit.

Eh? You have to compare on current prices, that is what the public are paying, not 360 price circa Nov 2005. To do anything else would skew the figures and would be unrealistic. The bloke buying a console today is buying at todays price and not what I paid last year. Get my drift? Sony have also stated no price cuts in 2007 and most likely until summer 2008 by which time the 360 will most likely be under £200.

Would that be the reduction you said may come in October? or were you suggesting they might come sooner but only be at full production in October?

Sad nah, Helpfull yeah :worthy:

Me to its like a no you smell no you smell type thing :)

And Yes 360 looks alot better now but that dose not change the fact that at launch it had the same near 40% mark up. So i just do not think Sony should get it up the arse for doing something that is common practice :) Thats why when people say sony are wankers for doing this it should be shown that microsoft did the exact same thing.
