Fellow streaming geeks,

I have been playing with TVersity of late and quite frankly it pisses all over WMP as a media server (transcoding ftw, FLAC / WMA lossless now streamed to PS3).

I've only got it setup basically just now (pointed it a root folder to access music) but I was wondering what other impressive stuff it can do? How do you have yours setup?

I found TVersity was adequate but couldn't cope with multi-track audio or embedded subs in MKV files.

I would point anyone wanting to stream video to the java based PS3 Media Server. It works with Windows, Linux or MacOS. The advantage it has over TVersity is that it will decode embedded subs in MKV files, works with practically every video format and uses less CPU. The last point is a good one. TVersity stuttered quite badly for me with HD streams. PS3MS is smooth as glass.

The best feature of Tversity is the Uninstall feature. It means you can cure you computer of AIDS and put PS3 Media Server on.

twonky doesnt transcode does it? as for ps3media the subs feature for mkvs is good and the ability to browse zip/rar files and raw images viewing is excellent as is small hit on cpu use but last time i tried to transfer my family vids and one or two tv eps to ps3 hdd, the transfered files were huge. i mean files around 1GB ended up becoming 4gb. does it support other devices yet?

Oh nonono... all I do is stream to the PS3. The original video files stay on my PC. I don't transfer the video files to the PS3 at all.

One thing that bugs me about Tversity is that sometimes it says "data type not supported" even when it played the file 10 minutes ago. I tried setting the transcoding to "always" instead of "when necessary" and it still does it from time to time. I'm starting to suspect my shite o2 router. Any ideas/tips ?

I've not been near it for over a year but I didn't find it adequate.

Although I was comfortable to mess around with it, I wanted a streaming solution that my family could use without difficulty and quite frankly the interface was not non/low-techie friendly. It was also crap at handling Pause/Rewind and such.

They may have improved TVersity since I last used it of course.

Turns out to be a very common problem when streaming using wireless. I've changed my connection to a wired ethernet and haven't had a problem since.
