It is not illegal to backup DVDs or CDs, it is currently (although under review) to bypass the digital protection (ie decrypt) from what I understand.
In the United Kingdom, making a private copy of copyrighted media without the copyright owner's consent is currently illegal

That is true but I think the common law has held it to be legal - sometimes statutes lag behind a bit.

Remember when using those short range radio transmitters to play your MP3s on your car radio was illegal? It took the law a couple of years to catch up and no-one was ever prosecuted for effectively being tiny pirate radio stations.

I don't think the legal or not debate is the key one. I think anyone making money by facilitating others doing illegal things is wrong. If his site did other stuff and he tried to stop the illegal stuff then he'd get some pity from me. I believe the site that everyone keeps comparing him to, Google, fits this description and so is not a valid comparison. But it seems he was only interested in earning revenue by facilitating the illegal stuff.

However, the idea of allowing the Americans to get hold of him and make an example of him I strongly disagree with. Let him be tried here, and let that trial further develop the UK laws around this murky area.

Presumably then anyone who runs an advertising-sponsored site which seeks to educate drug users on safety, is wrong?

It's bollocks. He's done nothing wrong under UK law and should be entitled to tell the yanks to go fuck themselves.
