with pipex too, got loads of emails regarding torrents but just ignored them and now they go into junk folder pipex's a horrible isp, wont be with em much longer

Multiple warnings? Move ISP before you get your arsed slapped bud, Pipex will only put up with so many complaints about your usage before they hand over your name and address. Either that or the copyright holders spot multiple infringements and go to court for your information and data logs, then you are royally fucked my friend!

That is why you need to protect yourself, switch to non-standard port, change to an ISP who doesn't care what you download if you can and make sure your torrent program is using encryption on the data itself. Oh and steer clear of PB as much as you can, plenty of other sources if you look around.

Personally in your situation after being warned (is it the first time?) I would change ISP, alot of the smaller ones aren't really bothered about what you download until you start going over your usage caps. If you are in the U.K. I would recommend Aquiss, bit more expensive than most ISP's but you get some very nice off peak usage caps and the tech support people are diamonds. A mate of mine is a very heavy downloader and has been for over 2 years, he is with Plusnet and has never been warned but I did set his Utorrent and router up so he was a little safer than you were anyway.

thats the thing(ill use estimated stats) the day i was downloading the thing that i got my warning from, i also was downloading other stuff, at the same time
since i downloaded that specific torrent, till when i got the email, i must have downloaded 7-12 gigs, and if they actually cared... how come i havn't been flagged again?
before the torrent, i must have downloaded 1.5TB atleast
and after the email(with a little more security in place) ive downloaded another 7-12 gigs, i just dont get it... pipex SHOULD have noticed me years ago

Not static ports, static i.p. addresses. Most ISP's charge extra for a static i.p. address, you are most likely on a dynamic i.p. address and therefore harder to trace anyway.

On the subject of ports, the default Utorrent port is 41965 or something like that. 95% of ISP's throttle that port or use traffic shaping on it, therefore you need encryption enabled to get around the traffic shaping and ideally you change to a port in the 50000 to 60000 range because they are less likely to be throttling or shaping those ports.

It is your call at the end of the day, using the standard Utorrent port is a mistake though, no two ways about it.

Funny thing is I do rarely use torrents, perhaps once a month on average, and I get these e-mails even when I haven't downloaded for ages, just looks like spam mail to me, changing ISP soon anyhow

move to sweden here u only get a small fine if ur caught downloading. and as its only a fine, the cops cant really do a whole lot to catch ya. only if u commit crimes that have a chance at sending u to jail. and that wont happend with just downloading files. theres been a few cases here in sweden about this and its all been fines no matter what. so its hard for MPAA/whatever to get the police to show intrest.

they keep sending mails and shit ive heard (never gotten one myself so far) but other then taking it cool for a while, theres really nothing to worry about. unless u want a clean record ofc.

oh, and any non law enforcement agency in sweden can not collect personal information about you. they CAN look at the IP's, but they cant store them or order any ISP's to tell them who you are. only the police can do that and its there the "fine only" comes in. they have better things to use their money on then chasing kids who's only gonna get a fine anyway.


P.S: i'm a tad out of the loop when it comes to this so i might not be 100% accurate, so if theres any other swede out there with more accutare info.....

Bear in mind that a DHCP lease will typically be renewed with the same IP address. The only times it won't is if the lease expires while your Network Device is off and the IP address is given to another network device that comes online during that time. ISp's in theory can force change but I don't think many do. (This doesn't apply to dial up OFC)

So even if you have a dynamic IP, chances are it won't change v often, unless you power off ur modems/router at night.

The charge is for a "Garuntee" that it won't change and is nothing more than a dhcp reservation based on mac address of nic.
