Ah yeah seen the vid now - seen some tortoise in Chester Zoo once giving it some serious shell love - the noise the male made was even louder and more high pitched than that - was hilarious, otherwise they are pretty quiet animals - had a lil meep out of or male once when I picked him up (I didnt hurt him or owt I just think he didnt see me coming and found himself levitating and didnt know how).. otherwise silent expcept for the shell banging on stuff as they wander about..

I heard the same thing actually, I think it's a certain species/'breed'(?) of them which you're not allowed to keep. The common turtles I think you can keep as pets as long as they've got the right food/place to sleep etc.

your not allowed to keep terrapins anymore, due to so many of them being dumped (just look in the fountains in watford)

They are pretty easy and fun to keep to be honest, the ones I bought cost about £100 each, the vivarium to keep them in, lighting, heating etc cost another £100 or so, feed them on all sorts, but they mostly love lettuce to be honest - its like trying to ween kids off macdonalds - they cock their nose up at butternut squash, peppers etc most of the time, love yellow dandelions though..

To keep them just make sure they are fed and watered and kept at an appropriate temp - when they are younger its best to keep them pretty much in the vivarium - its not hot enough in the UK climate other than summer to let them roam - especially young ones (pre 4 or so). I let them have the odd wander around the house, sit them on the couch with me n stuff :)

Need to bathe them weekly or so they say, other than that maintenance wise they are pretty low key...

Great pet, still make me laugh everytime I see them yawn or eat...the amusement never ends tbh :)
