Folks - I will do some research myself, but I know many of you are knowledgable folks so I am also posting here. My son has been accepted for a place at the Guildford Academy of Contemporary Music, I am delighted to say \o/\o/\o/ :) :england:

Now then - apparently it is £3k per annum for the course, and alledgedly, being a high income earner (albeit with a wife who is a high income spender ) he is not eligible for a stoodent loan or anything.... I am skint as a poor church mouse whose wife has left him with all the kids but no cheese and I would like some informed pointers as to what may or may not be available in terms of help to get him through said course.

All donations gratefully accepted too.

Thanks,

Jup.

P.S. To top it all off, FreddysHouse just told me my access will be removed if I don't renew my sub!!!

I had a friend who went to ACM, nice place.

As ACM isn't a university it may work differently, but you wont have to pay the course fee's up front, it changed a few years back. They get added on to your debt at the end of the course these days.

As for loans, he should qualify for one unless you're a millionaire... but he'll only get the basic (around 3k p/a, 1k per term).

Ring up your local council (county) and ask to speak to the student finance department, OR fill in this form with him Student Finance Direct - Calculator 08/09

Edit - Try looking into non-income assessed loans. Theres an option on the form i linked to do that and when i ran it through resulted in the basic loan. When i went to Uni i got a 4k a year because my folks were skint, and that was income assesed etc.

There's a grant (sorry, forgot name) that students are entitled to but not many apply as they aren't aware.

Bla, I'm sure the name will come to me soon. It isn't much if I remember correctly but some say it's around 1k-ish.

Also, ACM don't have a campus if i remember rightly so you'll be looking at higher rent prices than most students pay.

It's not far from home so he'll be commuting....

In that case a loan may be a waste of time if he can get a part time job. I'm 99% sure you don't pay course fees up front anymore.

If he did that, in all likelihood my mrs would go down there and put 5 quid in his hat per hour out of my hard earned anyway :(

Try this:

Student Finance Direct - Support available

If he's living at home then he should be able to get £3,500 or so. Also if you're earning less than £60,000 then he should be able to get a partial grant in some way - otherwise it's the full amount.

Considering he's living locally, he can get a part time job!

I got a student loan and my dad earns stupid amounts of money. I just went for the Not means tested bog standard just over 3k a year one.

Irony is that i'm quitting my job in order to start uni this year and i've worked it out that with loan, grant and bursary on top of a part time job doing 20 hours a week - i'll have about £2000 more a year money wise than i'm earning right now.

Score.

EVERY UK student gets a tuition fee loan and the regular student loan. Your income only effects the size of the loan. The minimum possible you can get is 4000 or do a year for the normal loan, dunno about tuition fee loan.

I'm with Pez, I always thought it was possible to get a loan - it just depends how much.

Poor English bastards, having to pay tuition :S

you can pay lump sums or a direct debit each term.

anyone can get a student loan if theyre going to uni. you apply for the none income assesed loan. you get the tuition fees paid plus about 2k spending moneys for the year.

Are you sure thats not the tuition fee loan?

I'm pretty sure the non-means tested student loan is around 4200

Your joking right cause i claim both and my fees get paid by the SLC and I get 3100 (odd) maintenance.

Its 3,150 odd actually tris :p

my fees are 1200 a year and i get 850£ a term that i can blow on booze and prostitutes.

edit: just found my letter. 1255 fees, 2685 spending money. think in the first year i actually paid my own fees because there wasnt a loan for them!

As far as I am aware most Unis have a finance office where you can claim for extra financial support, so it might be worth looking into that as well Jup. If he's living at home the costs will be minimal for your son (the biggest expenditure for me was tuition fees/accommodation fees) so he may be able to cover himself by working the summers and having a part time job.

Sorry to highjack the thread a bit, but is anyone aware of where a post-grad doing a masters can get a loan? The student loans company don't provide for post-grads unfortunately and the tuition fees alone are £7.5k!

People doing masters can apply for some basic help but cannot get any loans afaik.

Well - I read his offer letter and it looks as if he's chosen a place that is excluded from all student loan schemes.... it says as much on the contract.

They also want £350 up front to secure his place.

Happy happy days :(
