trust a virus scanner to f**k my system up

I finnaly invest in a virus scanner, mcAffe virus scan 6+ no doubt, with its designed for windows Xp logo on the side i feel safe,

well after a few days after its install, my usally very stable Xp system keeps crashing, and crashing and crashing. i frantically try the internet but whenever i try to type anything into any box on my OS the sytem crashes, after my ravaging of the running programs (clossing every one possible) i trace back the fault to the WBHOOK.DLL. file....

WHICH IS PART OF MCAFFEE VIRUS SCAN, ARGHHHHHHHH



Well no doubt i proceeded me to immediatly unistall and burn the wretched disk. now i have to try to repair the damage done. ARGHHHHHHHHHH

I installed the update and all my system went pear, so now I use Norton.

I'm using the corporate version of McAfee VirusScan on XP with no probs. Heard several horror stories about the home version, though.

Oh dear.

I got version 5 running on my PC at work and in an average 8 hour day mcafee has used over an hour of the CPU time. Not to mention the number of times it justs 100%'s the CPU and has to be rebooted. and I won't mention the hour it took me to boot up Win2k open Admin Tools and Services to disable McAfee cos it was using every ounce of CPU time AARGHHH

McAfee is so wretched

I have Norton 2002, works nice.

I read on the Windowsxp newsgroup that McAfee has a habit of mangling your email in outlook express. There is a patch for it though, so that may fix other XP issues. (Designed for.. pah!).

I've got a gist that AVG is good, never used it though.

I find most of it pathetic, but don't speak out cause I'm surrounded by em.
Don't really give a damn what people do with their lives tbh, not my place to say.

I used McAfee about 18 months back, then I upgraded to an AMD processor and motherboard and McAfee point-blank refused to scan the boot sector of the disk, in fact it crashed the PC doing so.

I switched to Norton and never looked back.

bloody thing. i also have a problem with my kensinton mouse, it seems the drivers that they released for XP turn windows's Xp's 'snap to' permanetly on had to default to generic drivers. does nothing work perfectly

nah there a problem in the kensington driver files. it embedded somewhere in them, found the file which does it, called exshow95, but it i disable it i lose the function of the scroll wheel.

Goddamn Mcaffee crap software caused me to shit myself this morning when Outlook (containing all my mail for the last 5 years, and a lot of important stuff) refused to open.

Turns out their codshit mail scanner screwed it up, a quick uninstall and reboot soon sorted it

the trouble is of course, n00b user, loads up idiot proof XP, loads up "XP lookalikie" McAfee and srambles their mail cause n00b doesn't know what a "patch" is yet.

Never gonna touch McAfee now. Glad I stuck with Norton now. Was £15 extra, but worth it for the quality.

the wbhook.dll crashed my machine everytime i enterd something into the URL bit in IE 6, in the search bit in Win Xp. opening floder openiong folder options, and from time to time the start menu

I use the corporate version of McAffe also, no problems so far.

Now is probably not a good time to point out that I am having to to a complete re-build fo my 2k server! But I don't know what killed it, think my Dad was messing with Active Directory. Now I have to do a total rebuild and somehow get my exchange server working again!!!!!

Well, whaddya know? I started getting Application Errors in explore.exe and iexplore.exe and there it is! wbhook32.dll at the heart of it. I take back my praise of McAfee.

There's a service pack for VirusScan 4.51 (the corporate version) which has sorted this, and there's this page which has service packs for the home version.

McAfee was still causing errors so I ripped the bastard out and leeched Norton AV 2002. I'll keep you posted.
