While doing nothing the other day I had a thought(it hurt!).

Who owns the artic and antartic? Are they their owns countries with a governing body or are they just left there with no one running or owning them?

I was thinking maybe I can stake a claim to the continents.

Please answer these questions before I book my trip there.

I believe there's no ownership - they're like world nature reserves or something.

There's huge oil reserves in the Antarctic but we've all signed an agreement not to touch it so we don't ruin the continent (by all I think pretty much all of the countries capable of exploiting them). However, I heard that as soon as Bush Jr got in he started making noises about opening wells there - just like he's done with the Alaskan oil reserves which the US promised in the early seventies that they'd never touch.

I suppose never in politics only means about 30 years :)

Q. Who owns Antarctica?

A. A number of countries have claimed soveriegn rights to Antarctic Territory; several of these claims overlap, and could potentially be disputed (see map below). Australia has the largest territorial claim, claiming 42% of the Antarctic Continent. The Antarctic Treaty (signed in 1961) puts all territorial claims on hold for the duration of the treaty, so no one actually owns Antarctica at the moment.

It isn't even a continent, IMO the 7 continents are:
North America
South America
Oceania
Europe
Asia
Africa
Antarctica

although Antarctica doesn't have a football federation so perhaps they should be omitted.

Wikipedia has a nice lil article on the continents too.

And now you can see why we bothered fighting to keep the Falklands, our claim overlaps with Argentina's so owning territory down there strengthens the claim for when they eventually (inevitably) start expoliting Antarctica.

Since no-one else has, and since I haven't signed the treaty, I lay claim to that big unclaimed region in the south-west.

I hereby name it Middlesbrough .
