Is it just a big scam?
I dont know about anyone else but I have no receipts for my clothes, so according to most policies I could not make use of the lost luggage clauses.
I also see no point in the cash cover, if for example you are covered for £100 cash but must pay £150 excess.

Is it only worth it for medical and cancellation expenses?

within the EU its a waste of money as the NHS will pay for your treatment, but you need a special card (get it form the post office). in the more shady countries you might be visiting, the few quid it costs might be worth it. Alternatively, just dont get hurt :p

Im only going to Benidorm. I told my mate surely we dont need medical insurance because of the E111111111111111111 card, but he reckons it is different somehow?

is benidorm in the EU? If so, then you have health cover.

Yep it is, its Blackpool in the sun of Spain.
I found one without excess to cover upto 500 quid of cash, so I went with it as thats all im really bothered about. Only £7!

There is a safe in the room, but you never know if the maid has a secret key to steal all your shit.

Bit more info about it from Money Saving Expert.

I know you don't plan to have any problems on holiday, but for peace of mind surely it's worth it? Cover for Europe should be cheaper anyway.

the health cover will be sorted by the NHS but if you break a leg or something nhs wont pay for the extra seats or stuff you need to be able to fly home again

I get it free from work - we also have a number to ring (collect call) where they will get us out of whatever country we are in no questions asked apparently - not quite sure why :)

Edit - but otherwise I would always pay for travel insurance to cover repatriation costs - seen 50K before just from europe for a chartered medical airlift.

When I went to America I thought it best to get travel insurance, sadly it didn't cover the minor case of blue balls I was suffering from for the first few days. :(

Don't mess around... get insurance.

I knew someone who suffered a SERIOUS head injury while snowboarding in Austria. Because of his E1111111 card, travel insurance and the British Consulate, he received emergency treatment and had long-term aftercare in Austria. Once he was fit enough to travel, he was brought home to continue recuperating in hospital here.

The moral of the story is that accidents happen. You can't plan for them.
