i know for a fact that on the west coast mainline virgins online concern is that their peak time trains run to time as these are the ones with the first class season ticket holders onboard, its the money they make from these services that provides the bulk of their income.

as a railtrack/network rail staff member i love my free and reduced travel :)

Kenny mate, do you travel on the victoria line or charring cross?

Cos if you travel on the Charring cross line, they are closing Strood Tunnel for 12 months!! GOnna be chaos.

Thought I would pass that little one on :D

Gotta say don't have a major hassle with trains.

Commuting daily on the Tyne & Wear metro - pretty reliable, train every 10 mins and cheap as chips (~£30 for a monthly all-zone, go-everywhere pass).

Then whenever we pop down to London, GNER mainline trains are usually pretty good, fairly comfy, nice food, one every 30 mins. Only gripe is they're a bit expensive but worth it for the non-hassle of driving imho.

beat me to it, I get the same train from York to London. Never bother checking the times, just turn up at the station and wait a few minutes for the next one. Get to London in just under two hours, take 3 and a half by car and you feel sick when you get there.

I come into London at Cannon Street and walk for about 20 mins to my office from there. I don't bother with the tube any more as it saves me 40 quid a month and it's not much quicker than walking.

Trains are mostly full of peasants and that's just in first class...oh sorry "Premier" as they like to call it now.

You can guarantee most of the twats in "Premier" who have their laptops out are looking at hentai or playing tetris.

Even worse than peasants. They're most likely to be students or old people.

when I still trained to amsterdam (1st class naturally), I'd usually be sitting between techs, management types and government peeps (had a nice chat with the 'green' party's top bloke once).
I was always laughing to myself, because I'd be getting loads of dirty looks: me in skate shoes, tshirt and three weeks worth of beard on my chin sitting in a veritable maze of suits and laptops.

what pissed me of regularly was the idiots who stole a 1st class seat with a 2nd (or none at all) ticket. not the fact that they did it, but that nine times out of ten they made a big deal out of getting kicked out of the compartement by the conductor. they should at least have to good grace to leave quietly if caught.

Or were genuinely too thick to realise they made a boo-boo.

I was reffering to the Victoria and Charring Cross Main lines, not tube lines :D

If you go through Strood, Higham, Gravesend, etc on your journey to work, then the closure of the tunnel is gonna cause you some headaches :(

P.S. If you do go on that line, you go right past my office on your way to work. Be afraid, cos strood is a total shithole :S

I take the dlr/tube/train from the far east of London to Surrey everyday. Its reliable, with no waiting more than about 5 minutes, and cheap (£130/month).

I can usually get a good half hour of work done before I hit the office and have a nice hot snack & coffee.

That said, I am moving to Surrey soon - a bike ride from the office.
