My friend would like a laptop but he still needs Windows. He's looking for something light, reasonable build quality, reasonable battery and reasonable price. 14 or 15 inch screen. I've tried looking for him but I'm struggling to find something that doesn't have a crap screen res. I don't want to lumber him with a 1366x768 15 incher.

Any ideas? Maybe £450-£500? Not looking for a Macboook rival but not something too shit.

tbh Wij the screen is where the buggers shave costs these days. imo the very least rez that is doable is 900 high. my current main lappy is 1600x900. works just fine for office and eclipse/visual studio etc.

I'd pick a worker rez and then compromise on other things if you really need getting down to 500 squids. myself I am ultrapicky: I don't think a lappy exists that I'd touch under 800, and that is purely rez/ram/ssd keeping the price up. cpu I don't care anymore als they're mostly all friggin awesome.

I'm looking at a 17" full HD i7. 16GB RAM, 2TB hard, 2GB graphics card, 240GB SSD, Windows 8 & Office for £1400. Too much?

No. Movies & MS office mainly. Also need to rip a load of DVDs to mp4. Reckon that spec will do the job?

Over kill. Don't need 2gb gfx card to do movies and ripping.

Yeah, I could select a 1GB card but the price difference was hardly noticeable

Why would you buy a laptop to use as a workhorse? You could knock together a small form factor PC that would do all of that better for like a quarter of the price (guesstimating).

A PC isn't mobile.

Yeah, ok, that would be the one condition but you're not going to be ripping DVDs on the go are you? Although, saying that, I wouldn't put anything past Lamp to be honest.

But still, the idea of using a laptop for something system-intensive like video encoding makes me cry a little on the inside. Lamp's other 2 requirements are movies and Office so he could make do with a *much* less powerful portable machine and spunk the rest on an encoding box for home, which he could even plug into his TV and use as an HTPC for playing back said encodes.

I understand everything except the last 3 lines
Encoding box? HTPC? Eh?
