I tried turning off MSN and ICQ in profile before, and can't find an option to do so. Anyone familiar enough with phpBB to tell me how I can do so?

I'd put an online safety f.a.q. up on the forums dam and advise kids not to list their msn address publicy. I'd also stick in a few lines of not giving out personal information such as locality, no of siblings, rl age, sex, name etc

I know it sounds obvious but it always amazed me how open young people are with information about who they are and where they live even now. The "it won't happen to me" head in the sand approach seems to be predominant even after all the horror stories.

As regards spammers - I've noticed an increasing trend now for people to just register an account on the forums I look after with evil spam sites or sex sites as their personal web page. Anyone click through new users personal websites get's immediately taken to these things and spammed to crap. I tend to trawl new users by id every day and anyone who hasn't responded to the confirmation email get's checked out. Those who have dodgy or unlikely looking 'personal' web sites get deleted immediately. I rarely ban the email addy as they're usually faked anyway.

On the subject of traceroute. I've recently disciplined two modern apprentices who decided to leave abusive spam on a private forum. Their Ip was tracked back to the college via something like www.dnsstuff.com and a complaint was made. They were a bit shocked when they got hauled over the coals as they thought they were 'anonymous'.

If you have persistant bad behaviour and it's a company - try ringing them up to complain - most companies will take action if they recieve a complaint and it tends to put a stop to it sharpish like.
