Do I start watching season 5 of the wire, or do I start on the shaft movie trilogy?

Both of them have lots of black people speaking cool black lingo so I think you're set either way.

But watch The Wire S5. It's absolutely fucking great.

I've heard a lot about The Wire but I've tried watching the first episode a couple of times... and it's the most dull thing on earth. I've heard it picks up but I'm left so demotivated by the thought of having to finish the first episode I'm not sure if I can be arsed.

Heh. I was about to write the EXACT same thing. Couldn't make it through the first episode.

Honestly, it was the best show on TV. It's a slow starter though, you need to force yourself to stick with it, get to episode 5 and you'll probably be hooked. It's not formulaic like other shows, each seasons is built around a single story and it runs like a novel. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who's seen a lot of The Wire and doesn't think it's simply fantastic.

The hard part about The Wire is trying to understand everything that happens, if you stick in there it will draw you in. Anything you don't quite understand, you can just read Wikipedia and the episode will be summarised there. The characters are all utterly believable.

It is easily on a par with The Sopranos.
