i dunno, i wasnt paying attention :p

anyway, had a quick poke on it, the AI seems to be, er, somewhat better. never had probs beating AI with any TW game before, had 2 quick "i wonder what this button does" campaigns. was defeated in 10 turns in both trys, on normal. i really must actually pay attention :(

so looking rather good so far, hope it holds up and there arent any odd problems further down the line, (mentioning no names MTW2 shield bug).

Aye, seen a few review videos where they try the AI out, and its apparently fucking brutal. It's using proper strategy and even tricks you into attacking from a side that looks weak but is a trap... :)

I don't think i'l be buying this one, i'm soso at best with strategy games and this game will most likely wipe its arse with me :)

I'm holding off until the real fans actually play the game, game reviewers are fucking useless at reviewing games they actually can play, nevermind games they can't like the Total War ones. Not a single reviewer noticed for example that the AI couldn't invade Britain in Empire because it didn't know how to use boats.

I've pretty much given up on the Total War series, last few have really been disappointing.

No faith in a software vendor who releases a strategy game with an AI, that

a) cant work out how to use a boat and

b) masses troops that mill around in small stacks like headless lemmings

Had a faction from the far end of the map land an army right beside my capital, so I can attest to that being fixed now

AI seems pretty good overall, can be rather nasty in the campaign.

Liking the RPG elements on generals, really missed it in E:TW and N:TW.

i didn't really like the Napoleon and Empire games because they were so gunpowder orientated but looking forward to playing this

The coop campaign is fun, turn based on the campaign map and in battles you can 'gift' units to your ally to play

Stupid question but as I loved the original Shogun and have all of the TW (apart from Rome) is this good and worth getting? Reviews seem to indicate they've beefed up the AI even further for some taxing fun....

Take this with a grain of salt as i've only messed with it last night for 2-3 hours.

It does seem a lot more slow paced than Shogun 1, and i'm not talking about combat, mainly the map actions and stuff. Passing turn also takes a while - might be my machine, but it's pretty decent for games still (X3 720 BE clocked at 3.2, 4gb ram, 4870 1GB).

I like the general development thing a lot, and also the ninja speccing is nice.

AI didn't seem to smart in terms of diplomacy, I had Tokugawa as neighbor with 2 provs, while I had 4, and a larger army, and the bastard would insist I pay him tribute. Finished them 5 turns later.

Stupid things like "path blocked" for Ninjas???? FFS guys... a ninja getting path blocked by enemy army, wtf. A ninja is like chuck norris, only invisible.

That's it for now, I guess...

Haven't all the TW AI's had this? In Medieval 2, you could rule half the map and some small nation would demand tribute. Due to the peace bug, you could end up at war with the entire world.

Or Rome's AI declaring war one turn, then asking for peace the next, and declaring war again over and over. Total War campaign AI has always been shit, and it doesn't seem to be a priority to fix.

Never had that issue.

But i've never completed any of those games so maybe i just didn't play long enough :)

Finally found time to play, and the vanilla game is a nice bag of surprises and oh-shit moments.

My main issues are AI tough. Had enemy faff about in a forest during sieges several times (same castle tough, maybe region specific). AS I had a tiny garison, I'd have to wait the 15 min battle time out.

Only been playing as Uesegi, on my third campaign at the moment.
First campaign ended when the Takeda rolled over me with 6000 men. This was only 20 turns in. I had beaten several hostile armies of local clans, but Takeda got the undefened castles.

Second game I got about halfway through when my wars started spiraling out of control. Was bankrupt but was winning battles with my 2 armies. Divided Realm happened, and the shogun came for me. Game over.

One gripe I have is that the AI leaves castles undefended too often. AI's get big and then collapse from over exposure. So I downloaded a mod which ups the garrisons of all castles, meaning you need a half stack to take on an undefended castle. AI survives much better now.

Third campaign I took it slow, building up economy and alliances, arranged marriages etc. Economy is very strong, I have some top tier buildings, but again, winning battles is getting my Acclaim up so high that war is coming quicker than I wanted. Vasalised a lot of clans rather than vanquishing them, will see how that turns out.

Been looking at other mods and there is a realism mod that looks pretty damm good.

Had a very similar experience to you. Started with Uesegi and Takeda and his ally started battering me with their enormous armies around the same time, held them off for a while by managing to cause mutinies, rebels taking undefended provinces slowed them down. Ultimately I got rolled and restarted as the Date Clan, quite far in now but after taking time to build up and then getting bufffucked by my allies, beating them down and restoring alliances, my chances of taking 25 provinces and Kyoto by the time-limit look slim.

I think I read somewhere that reinforcements sitting on the edge of the map until the end of a siege is a bug that'll get fixed. First time it happened I got impatient and sent out my remaining troops and ended up losing :p

Two things about the diplomacy aspect annoys me.

Realm divided is a downard spiral. I have alliances, trade agreements etc with the Date. Yet eventually they'll declare war on me.

Vassals will break free and declare war too. It makes vassals a poor choice. You know they will turn on you. Which is a shame... as I have the hojo, takeda, shimasu, imagwa and someone else as my vassals at the moment.

Im one province away from triggering realm divided, so just building up armies and infrastructure. Still early days, have 3/4 of the game still to go so no rush.

Finished a domination game (60 provinces) on hard, wasn't that bad other than the start and the Realm divide. I wasn't ready for the divide and got shafted, reloaded a few turns before and spent some time preparing and it wasn't so bad. Ended up having to build quite a decent fleet since 3 separate factions kept trying to send armies around by boat.

Got one of the Katana hero units out at the end, sent him through an open castle gate into a pack of ashigaru in the last province and they killed nearly 200 for the loss of 1. Not nearly as many as my 2 units of hojo fire throwers - they got 600 and 400 :D

Deffo the best TW game to date - has all the improvements of Empire and Napoleon but back to proper melee combat the way it should be.

id second that sentiment
as much as Empire/napoleon was an improvement, i prefer punchy stabby to stand off and shoot, just looks boring :(

Mabs, I played a game with that mod, it was interesting. My allies stayed with me. My recent vassals declared war on me (and were promptly stomped into the ground).

Vassals are broken though. My allies throughout the entire game, the Ouchi, kept on declaring war on my vassals. Since they had my back, I abandoned one vassal. Only for them to declare war on a second. My honour couldn't take that, so ended up at war with them. Bought peace for 10,000 ..... next turn they attack a second vassal.

Should not be possible to declare war on a Vassal. It bypasses the masters alliance, and the AI doesnt realise that a 1 province feeble clan has the backing of a terrifying 20 province clan.

Sure but you could also argue that if it worked the way you say you wouldn't have ANYONE declaring war on you or your vassals in the end because you will most likely be the most powerful nation in the game.

The AI probably "knows" you are backing up their declared war upon vassal, they just don't care... ;)

Yeah, but then the AI should team up with other AI's to form an alliance of comparable size rather than fighting each other. If you ever played the mod Magna Mundi for EU3, then that's the AI behavior they should be aiming for

Man this realm divide stuff is starting to suck, my allies from Turn 2 are about to turn on me despite marriages, hostages, alliances, trade agreements and numerous gifts :(

Can't use the mod either i don't think, i'm not using steam.

I am playing as Tokugawa. Going pretty good at the moment, my units are not the best so i have to rely on covert tactics to overcome Takeda at the moment. Best Total War title easily.

turned out by realm divide i was too rampant for it to matter, had an alliance on either side that lasted a while so i just conquered most threats and won. Played as Oda and 99% of my army throughout was just Ashigaru, made it soooo easy
