guys,

Trying to fix up a laptop which has a weird fault with the keyboard.

basically, certain keys will not work :

None of the function keys
1-0 keys dont work.
certain letters dont work.
certain letters DO work.

managing to check things out using a USB keyboard plugged in.

had a hunt about for threads with similar issues but havent found anything.

any suggestions?

meant to add:

the light on the CAPS LOCK key does not come on when pressed, but it does shift the characters to uppercase.

Check to make sure all the keys work in dos or similar to rule out a software / driver fault. Might be worth check the ribbon cable is in properly.

Sounds like the ribbon cable has wiggled loose on one side of the connector, if you can open it up or remove the keyboard bezel and reseat it then you may have an easy fix.

As above, ebay around for spares - you'll pick one up for around 15 quid typically, or 40-50 if you buy from a "store" or specialist online place.
