FTP is the only thing that comes close to newsgroups but it entirely depends on the FTP's you have access to. You also need them to be up, and you need them to have a good throughput. In my experience newsgroups are far more reliable, I'm always able to download at full speed and there's never a problem with availability. Plus, you don't have to kiss arse to get good sites.

FTP has too much of an elitist air about it. And I don't have access to any good servers so I'm bound to claim that NGs are better.

I think it all comes from FTPs... but that doesn't mean that as an end user that's something I want to use. When it comes to actually downloading stuff, I find newsgroups much better. Plus there's no problems with mess if you use newzbin - if you're browsing groups it's absolutely attrocious, if you use a newzbin or any other index site it's great. Plus - you've got comments on posts which help a lot. Finally, it's highly unlikely I'd be able to download at full speed from even the best FTP's given that usually I need multiple threads, with giganews I can do 10threads and get about 2000-2200k/s
