Its offical as of last night Star Wars was voted number 1, in a viewer pole of best movies of all time, on channel 4. I was well pleased, and pulp fiction, also a great film came in 2nd

A good programme, but I was disappointed SW was number 1. Nice to see clips of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Apocalypse Now and The Godfather.

Seems most films in the top 100 were made in the seventies, though admittedly, I only saw the last half-hour.

Wtf was Gladiator doing so high up as well? Was good fun, but not one of the best.

Um, no it didn't, the godfather 1&2 came in second, were you ACTUALLY watching the programme?

I was very disappointed to see Star Wars in first place.

As much as I like Star Wars it certainly isn't the top movie of all time.

What struck me as odd was having two Sci-Fi and two Mob movies in the top ten, and under any "normal" circumstances you'd never see a Tarentino film head anyones list.

Then again it was Channel 4 ...

Some knobhead from the Guardian didn't think Star Wars could be considered a "classic", the fact was that movie broke the mould of Science Fiction and set the standards for the next 25 years, plus the storyline was as classic as you could get it.

I remember watching Star Wars when it first came out, as a teenager, and the magic has stuck with me ever since, I cannot name any other film that has done the same, and there are a lot of people who feel the same way.

George Lucas answered his critics when Episode I came out saying "these people just don't get it", and I know exactly what he means.

Think about it, "Jedi" is a religion now :)

Star Wars was written by George Lucas, as a basic outline of most "myths". It is as close to a modern myth as we get in modern times. Thats why it grabs peoples attentions, and people can relate to it so well. He wanted it to be his most commercial film, and thats why he made it to appeal to the widest possible audience...

Personally I find these programs pointless, arguments over the best film belong to drunken pub sessions...

It was compiled from a list of polls that were compiled with the general public's votes.

It was stupid that they put the Godfather 1 & 2 and Star Wars 1 & 2 (or 4 & 5 if that's the way ye want it) in the same spots.

And I rate The Godfather WAAAAAAAY above Star Wars.

Pulp Fiction came 4th, actually.

Still, that programme alerted me to several films I now want to go out and rent; and I think the "Star Wars" legacy (even though I dont like it personally) gave it good reason to be placed at the top.

I watched the last half, I know its simply made up from votes BUT! Star wars? It's good yes, but as a movie The Shawshank Redemption is far superior. Also Godfather 1 and 2 deserved to be higher. Star Wars deserves to be in the top ten, but not first.

Oh yeah Magnolia deserved to be there too.

Firstly, Goodfellas is better than Godfather

secondly, The Shawshank redemption should have been top,

thirdly, dances with wolves should have been somewhere of a noteable position,

fourthly, The Matrix shouldnt have been that high

fifthly, American Beauty wasnt of a noteable position either:(
