Lately my eyes have become sore after using the computer. Feels like i have sand in my eyes and it temporarily makes my eye sight slightly worse. Tried lowering brightness to minimum but it didnt help.

So is it possible to get permanent damage to your eyes from using the computer and if so, how do you prevent that? (Other than reducing the time you spend on your computer ofc -,-)

might be a mild case of conjungteritus (probably not correct spelling :p ) any goo around your eyes? :p

are your eyes red at all? try just resting your eyes for a while (ie avoid watching tv/computers/reading, just lie down and look at nothing o_O

i only get the feeling you are describing after wearing my contacts for ages, and helps if i switch to glasses for a while :p

One way to reduce eyestrain is to set your refresh rate as high as possible. Next, use the smallest monitor you can and make sure the lighting around you is good. Dark rooms + monitors = sore eyes!

Sit near a window so you can change your focus alot - helps to keep your lenses flexible =)

In moderation, the use of a computer can be good for your eyes. After all they have muscles and exercise is good. Regular breaks and a small screen if gaming help alot else prepare for the bloodshot doom eyes of All Hallows eve :p

The "rate" of monitor, what was it, hertz thingy...i had a similar problem when i had it way too low :D

Also, dry air in room, dry air outside, fall-time, cold air, not enough water in diet, etc.

You could get medical and try soe drops or creams or whatnot, but that's no good solution.

Also, try to yawn(gets the waterworks going) and blink more every now and then.

personally I just have extremely dry eyes, have tried pretty much all contacts there is out there but none work (so I am using glasses), think that's the reason why I get bloodshot eyes so easily

Yeah, permanent damage can happen. But it's only with alot of computer use.

There are monitor covers(dimmers or some such) etc that can prevent it a bit, but it's basically a "job hazard".

As a game dev, i'm most likely to own a pair of glasses in the next 10 years, if not sooner.

When your eyes feel sandy it is usually a sign of tiredness.

The days of needing screens over monitors long gone. Also refresh rate only relevant with CRT's.

Can certainly get eye strain, because your eye muscles are fixed in one position for ages. So take a break often, even every 5 or 10 mins just to look around and stretch those eye muscles.

If your eyes are dry and/or and irritated because of that dryness, i doubt very much that that is directly related to the monitor (you do blink dont you?). Like said above, could be conjunctivitis (bacterial infection that often goes away, sometimes needs treatment with antibiotics).

Too much use of computers and watching screens can permanently damage your eyes. Particularly if you play in a dark room with bright artificial light.

Take regular breaks.
Stop masturbating to porn all the time. Get a girlfriend FFS.
Get some natural daylight.
Open a window. Let the smells out of the room. Might help stop the wallpaper peeling off
Take a bath
Stop pissing in coke bottles and storing them in your cupboard.
Empty the night soil bucket more than once a month.
Buy some pile cream
And some ointment for the crabs.

Something that sorted out my eye-problems after using the computer too long was throwing out my CRT and replacing it with a nice TFT monitor, if you already done that - then you might want to visit a doctor or try any of the other tips listed already :p

Aye old CRTS could cause damage, and output a lot of radiation. Hence the screens.

Youre not using an old crt are you?

i think its obvious that if you constantly stare at something a fixed distance away, its going to change the shape of the lense and reduce the function of the muscles controlling it.
