On topic: I don't see a problem with the payout, other than it took 2 years to award.

While in essence the payout is ok the simple fact is the payout should be taken from the mother for being stupid enough to leave two toddlers in the car alone with a carjack.

PS I decided I should take back my BBC crown.

you should never leave children anywhere with Jack. He's got a bad reputation

I want to know how she knows he was hit with it 11 times, I doubt the kid was counting.

That's not exactly a true method of measuring it though is it. He could have been hit 30 times.

I thought it was pretty wrong - its like a reward for being a negligent parent - I mean how long were those kids in there to be bored enough to dig out the car jack?

Give her the money then take the kid into care - that'd stop such claims :p

How can someone be awarded with compensation for a 'criminal' injury when the perpetrator of the 'crime' isn't a criminal?

Sounds bloody stupid to me. As if money is going to make the kid's nightmares go away. It might buy the mother a new kitchen though.

The mother should only be awarded money to cover any costs that arise from problems her son faces due to this; e.g. the cost of counselling, not just for the action alone, because clearly her son is not going to benefit from that money; she is.

She was on radio 2 yesterday, Jeremy Vine asked her what she intended to do with the money and she said she didn't know. He tried to push the question again but she seemed to awkwardly avoid the answer.

Exactly Tom, my tort lecturer was saying the exact same thing on Friday. How can they claim from the Criminal Compensation board when the minimum age for a criminal action is 10 years old. There is an issue here that it could open the floodgates for more potential actions!

More importantly why were two 3 year olds left alone in a car long enough for one of them to batter the other with a car jack, was the parent not in hearing range? The money should also be put in trust for when the kid reaches 18...the mother will only spend it on tabs and Lambrini.

She is from the Wirral, therefore a posh scouser so she is a little too upmarket for Lambrini, 2 litres of Bacardi Breezer is more her style because it is 'exotic'. :p Oh and the more I think about it the more convinced I am that this payout is a bad idea, if she had been a decent mother this attack would never have been so extreme in the first place.
