Hi, I've got a bit of spare time and quite fancy getting into a bit of online gaming again after a few years break, trouble is, I'm not sure where to start.

What games are popular nowadays? My pc is just about average I guess by todays standards (P4 2GHz, Geforce 4 etc...) so nothing to demanding.

I used to be into Tribes and Quake3 (both TDM and Duel) so something similar would be great.

Can anyone recommend anything?

On a serious note...Painkiller, UT2K4, new Tribes (Vengence? Is it even out yet?)

TBH you'd be better off getting an Xbox and Xbox Live! if you want to start playing online again without spending a fortune on PC upgrades; your PC would play CS OK(ish) but would struggle with the likes of UT2K4 or Desert Combat; I've got a P4 3.0Ghz 512Mb GF5200 and I'm about to double the RAM and get a new Graphics card because my current spec is only just 'acceptable' and I know that its going to wheeze and groan when new titles like BF2 come out (Far Cry was poor on my PC and I'm sure I wasn't getting the full HL2 experience when I played it).

Personally I'm a bit depressed about PC online gaming at the moment; there's lots going on in the MMORPG area, but FPS is looking pretty moribund with a couple of exceptions and that's got to because the whole upgrade pace is too expensive making PC gaming even more "L337 g4m3r" uber-bollocks than its ever been . Xbox Live is where its at as far as ease, choice and cost go.

I've been playing True Combat mod for Enemy Territory. The best thing about this is that it's free. Not as good as the Quake 3 one though :/

Unlike a lot of Mmorpg's Wow doesn't require the same level of time commitment. It's perfectly possible to log on for an hour or two and feel that you're achieved something rather than spent that hours trying to form a group (perfect or otherwise) in order to achieve something.

So you could probably still keep your social life :)

I dont think it would hurt a lot for some of you hard core fps guys to try a mmorpg, it can be fun!

I've ventured to the dark side (WoW) from FPS land and I have to say I'm enjoying it. Find (or rope in) a good bunch of people and it's very social and a lot of fun.

(Just 'til Quake 4 comes out mind ;))

Get halflife 1 on steam, and install Natural Selection. Play a few combat games, its the game I play more than anything else, it rocks.

Call of Duty would run with everything on max, its more of a realism slightly slower pace than unreal etc though.

Tribes Vengeance is out but IMO Tribes 1 was the best and they got slightly worse with each release.

Something kind of similar to Tribes is Battlefield 1942, its better than the (sequel) Battlefield Vietnam as plays far smoother for one.

BF1942 is like tribes cos its all about arcade gameplay and big battles (64 players normally) and it has land vehicles, sea and air. BF1942 will also run fine on your system.

Also get as mentioned Wolfenstein Enemy Territory cos its a free download, arcade ish and also supports large teams (max of 64 players i think or is it 32..)

Catsby has deep emotions for Enemy Territory, however the lack of professionally supported maps lead to an ultimate decline in his interest.

Counter-Strike Source is splendid in my opinion. However I know lots of people, even those I had previously thought to be sensible and of good character, are playing WoW at the moment.
I can only assume this is a passing phase , and the proper state of things will return shortly.
Me, Im waiting for DoD Source, other than that Im fine with what Ive got, thanks very much :)

I still play a Quake3 mod called Urban Terror (soon to be ported over to Enemy Territory):
