In Denmark it's bear.. My brother used to walk as a guard for the Queen and he said on a sunny day the temperature could reach somewhere around 65C inside the hat/helm/whatever!

They are actually very light, its bamboo sticks making the shape and covered in bearskin, they did try synthetic material but it didnt look or feel as good so they went back to bearskin. My bearskin was old, from the 60s and was beautifully soft the leather band inside was very soft too so when it got really hot it wasnt uncomfortable like the newer ones

A tip to tell if its real Bearskin is real ones go slightly brown on top where the sun bleaches it

EDIT: the most annoying part is the curb chain (the chain on the chin) when it gets hot and sweaty it rubs against your chin, it sits below your lips and on top of the chin not tucked underneath, and is sweaty.

One game we used to do is get someones curb chain and wipe your arse with it just after coming of stag then when that person went out when it started to get sweaty they could smell your rotten arse hahahaha

If you look after your bearskin its pretty good, to groom them you have to wet them anyway, you soak them, brush them upwards and hang them upside down to dry, when they dry they fall down but have a nice bounce to them so when you move your head they shake, you also soak a tail into the back too for a nice shape

Another trick we used to do is put a watch inside people skins wrapped around a cane, set the alarm for half way through their stag!!

Mobile phones was another then you get into the guard room, watch the camera so you can see them on stag and start ringing the phone!! was brilliant

The phone was slightly harder to get away with as it was heavier, so we only used to do it to the new guys who didnt know any better

What are the rules? Rumours say that the guards are not allowed to move or talk unless ... well... something´s happening. Hence all the silly tourists making all the funny faces and shit. If the alarm clock goes off under their hats, are they allowed to take it off and check what´s going on?
Also, I noticed that those hats are coming in different forms. Some are pretty high and slighly bend forward, some are just like a sugar loaf. Is that an effect of the bamboo stags bending?

All the skins are hand made, most have a slight bend forwards but age and how its made all play a part. Also height of them is determined on the width of the hat, so depending how tall the person is, you dont want a 5 foot 7 guy wearing a very high skin, same way you dont want someone who is 6 foot 3 to be wearing a tiny one

You are on stag for 2 hours at a time, during that time you are allowed to come to attention, change arms and stand at ease, to rest your arm. You can also come to attention turn to the side march 15 steps up and down to get the blood flowing. If someone is being a pest you can come to attention, port arms and scream at them to stand back, which was always hilarious, i've made full grown men cry doing that.
You can also have a laugh too when there are women around and you chuck one a cheeky wink, they love that!

Making children cry was always the best, as they are walking up to you, you come to attention, bang your feet as loud as possible, change arms slapping the rifle as hard as you can then standing at ease again

So you see there are plenty of things to do to keep busy
