I don't know Tris, to me it makes a difference if you couldn't go because you had something planned because it was a wednesday, or if you didn't go because it was a wednesday and you could have hypothetically had something planned, so just didn't go on principle. I'm not trying to dig at you, just calling it as I see it. I'd be arsey if a bunch of students refused to go out on a trip on a wednesday because it would impede their option to play netball if they so desired, but actually didn't desire in the slightest - that's why I'm asking.

But that's the problem Damini, it shouldn't have been planned for a wednesday. I knew guys in Uni that would hit the training field for the rugger teams at 1pm weds afternoon and wouldn't be back until later. Whether Tris was in a team or society or not is irrelevent. He may have been and as such that Lecturer cannot assume that they just couldn't be bothered to attend.

A teacher couldn't pull a stunt like that so why should it be OK for a lecturer to pull it? There's alot of "Young people don't know how easy they've got it" amongst the responses to this thread (not you damini but from others, Tom, Dys etc) and I am stunned. You wouldn't be happy if you recieved that kind of treatment from any other company. Just because they're university lecturers doesn't mean they have the right to bully people into trips and essays on a whim. He might not have any particular reason for not going on this trip but he shouldn't need one. it's on an afternoon where Lecturers are expressly told NOT to timetable anything.

Under the grants there was that ability for Universitys to blithely ignore the complaints of their students but now students deserve better treatment. It's not like they're not being gouged for massive fees that many universities don't need to charge.

Fuck fair tbh - it's against uni regulations and tris was right to complain, whether he's being slack or not is irrelevent. It's still a breach of policy and student rights.

The best thing tris has learnt is where not to come for advice in future

I used to be a student, and I also have friends who are lecturers, so I'm just looking at both sides of the coin. If the opportunity for something relevent to the course came up at short notice, on a day traditionally kept aside for other activities, then I don't think the lecturer is necessary going home to flay the skin off babies to make soft, soft moccassin shoes because they said for people to go along. If nobody turned up, even though they had nothing planned, on a point of principle rather than an actual real objection, then I can see why the lecturer might be irritated by that. If everyone had grouped together before hand to expressly tell him/her that they were boycotting the trip would be one thing, but just for nobody to turn up is a different matter of etiquette, and a little inflamatory.

And then there of those of us for whom any change in routine is stressful, and also any challenging of any sort of authority is stressful.

If it had been me I'd likely have been hiding at home/digs that afternoon, if not for days after.
