Ive always wanted to duel a friar, they are the coolest class in DAOC imo, too bad they are so few and far between

1or2 days ago i had the pleasure to meet a friar,he was orange con and i got him down to about 40% with my bow,so i thought i could meelee him to death...big mistake

he so much wooped my ass, i didn't believe me eyes at the end he had about 10% and me was smacket to the ground

To anyone who expects an easy fight with a Friar of a similar level, think again. Envisage Jackie Chan on speed wielding an appropriate staff that deals out massive damage and there you have a package of destruction that will deal swiftly with any wannabe who thinks they can deck a Friar.

Ok I admit I'm the wannabe.

Several days in Emain's DC valley I attempted to try and defeat a lvl 50 Friar named Cronn, without using my PA (due to the fact he was running rapidly in the opposite direction to me) and having no buffs. Showing no cunning and tactics whatsoever, I simply steamed into him and hoped for the best. If I can recall the damage he hit me for it went: 450+200, 360+50+70 so consequently I prompty died without even making a real impact on him.

What amazed me just as much as the damage he was hitting for was the speed of this staff he was using. So to any wannabes out there, you have been warned

frairs self buff make their armour same absorb as chain isnt it ?

Its the self-haste buff that does it, I've started a friar as my alt and havent regretted it, even though i've specced him slightly more for support he can solo oranges with ease. They do great damage, but its not so much the damage as how frequently they attack. The instant self-haste buff is amazing, alot of the time I don't bother unless the shit hits the fan but when you whack that on I find myself attacking faster then I can hit the quickbar style buttons.

Only problem is only being able to wear leather armour, that kinda sucks until you get the big absorb buffs.

Although I did die about 10 seconds after this fight to a Hunter (who then died to Aussie ) because your snare and poisons had me firmly stuck to the ground.

two cleavers pack a naaasty punch but if the friar has his epic armor on and has gone to lengths to get some slash resist i think it can be an even match.. remember staffs have bonus damage versus studded

but i'm gonna have to put the money on me mate even if i love them crazy kung-fu bastards ^^

Friars can beat zerkers, evade some hits and your there, some other methods you can use it so sprint (friars got end-spell, so they can sprint forever) then heal yourself, beat the zerk

friars can only perma sprint with high tireless RA (the one that reduces run speeed end cost)

if specced right their leather armour has 2% less absorb than plate, scale etc

they also get some damn nice resistance buffs to tackle nukers, pity they got no ranged ability whatsoever

And therein you have the reason people don't (as yet) play friars much at all. Consider your options as a newbie - are you going to take the tank with shiny armour and a big sword for fighting in, or are you going to take the guy in leathers with the big stick.

1.5something will fix that though, giving friars a small DD for pulling and suchlike.

Truth be told though, when you give a class a shedload of buffs, fairly high evade, parry, some quite nice armour actually, as someone mentioned above, and some bad-ass staff styles, plus the ability to heal like a cleric... it is very surprising that people have left the friar on the shelf thus far.

I have had a friar called chyna (lvl 50 friar) a duel 4 times and ive only won 1 out of the 4. They hit hard - hit me for 200 each time round about.

Ohn gorre this afternoon there was a friar, Quicksilver, in the duels, and doing pretty damn well.

Though he didn't want to fight me, no one wants to duel a caster

hehe idd friars are a luvly class too play with, main is friar...was so from the 1st week of daoc EU (only regret it sometimes coz friars don't find groups as clerics do (don't quote me on that)
but i had some encounters in emain at lvl 40 that assasisns tried to kill me... my funniest fight was in the gorge between mill and crim:
i saw a luri nightshade pop up behind me...orange con...i got him(or her do'nt remember) to 20% hp or so when the POISON took me down the poison did mroe dmg then the 2 dirks combined if i had hit 2 of my missing attacks the luri would've death meat (but i would prolly be taken down by the poison)

-or when they mistake you for a caster that's always fun u see them standing there with the look on their face like WTF he survived my first attack ???

yeah i love my friar hes only lvl 46 atm but dueling with his ra today i was taking down lvl 50 tanks/ns's (had aeidel 2 times) and as for staff spd nice things friars get is a 76% haste buff (shout 30 secs dur on a 3 min timer) that does not effect dps (some haste buffs just make you hit quicker and keep your dmg over time the same) so you can be hitting with a 16 dps weap with say 4 spd at the spd of a 3 spd weap or less and getting the 4 spd dmg that hurts. and to finish it off evade 5 and +15% abs buff (44 enh) does not make like chain as you wont have as much af as chain (chain has a higher af multiplier than leather in the final af) but you will have 25% abs and chain has 27% and as for zerkers they hurt me art the moment i only have the 10% abs buff wont have 15% till lvl 50. Friars are also gimped at the moment if you beleive it or not they will be hurting you more in the future. Some of you will know that stave Dmg is based on dex, some ppl will think str as it is a cruch weap but thats not so (even mythic thought it was str when making the friar). And mythic decide to make piety str and cons primary stats for a friar hmm gee thanx mythic. so along comes 1.51 with a big fix self dex/qui buffs at lvl 45 enh you get a +75 dex /qui buff (also stacks with your conc buff +45) in the future zerkas should ph33r friars really especially with left axe nerf on its way(ok so theres a crush dmg nerf but the buff will accomodate for that at least).

They are a really fun class to play i made one after getting bored with my wiz, still on the 1x spec per lvl days and been having fun staff slappin fun ever since

You also heard that zerkers are getting 2 new things. a DD attack useable at any time, set on a timer and a new evade so they can evade from all sides instead of just the front.

Friars have a lot going for em. Sad fact is that Mythic with RA's, the self dex+qui buff, and the pulling 'taunt' shout has made friars in the US completely amazing in PvE, without fixing any of the problems in RvR. Most of said problems are the same for any other healing class or any other melee class, to be fair, but still....Also, crush is in the US a pretty crap damage type for an alb, with the new armor resist tables. Thrust or slash are about even for alb, but crush? Ugh, pretty damn bad.
