Just wondering if anyone knows how good/bad their broadband service is? It's a bit cheaper than BT is why I ask... or are there any other Broadband services that are similarly cheaper; I know AOL is 2 quid cheaper but, imo, they are even more ebil than BT...

Well how much is it?

Pipex is 23.99 I think (I should probably know as I'm on it) and the service is ded gud.

Jolt/Nildram is better for gaming. Download speeds are top too, £23.99

Tiscali is 25 quid for 512 or 19.99 for 256... wonder if I can just switch over to Pipex, I've been with BT for well over a year.

I wouldnt get jolt adsl simply because most of the jolt admins are cunts ( in my experience and opinion ).

They rely on ignorant people thinking that there is no alternative.

They also succeed in this to a large degree.

Zen is £23.82 and you only have to sign up for 1 month at a time!

Dont know what kind of service you get from BT but in the past 26 months Ive never not been able to connect, never lost connection and never had any poor d/l or u/l speeds.

To me reliability is more important than improved pings.

For the sake of 1 or 2 squids it doesnt seem worth the hassle. I think Id have to be saving somewhere in the region of a fiver before Id consider changing from BT.

/edit hmm you are saving a fiver must rethink, though Id be nervous about changing

Give them a call and say you want to cancel. They'll offer you either a free month, or a free month and 3 months reduced by £6.

The call centre is in India, so you need to listen really carefully to hear what they say!

Like I said, pipex are tip top.

Also clowneh, you say jolt/nildram are better for gaming.. they better be pretty bloody good then as pipex gives me pings of 20-25 to most servers I care to play on.

Also the good thing is that with pipex you get fantastic newsgroup access. Something I discovered recently which blows as I'm about to leave pipex (moving to a uni house getting bulldog 2mbit). For those that don't know, you can download lots and lots and lots of good things from a decent newsgroup server.

I chose not to go with BT cos when I was on their 56k tarrif they complained I was using it too much!

So I said fine your'e not getting any more of my money then!

Pipex sounds like Nildram in disguise :)
I ping Jolt servers for 9, and BW servers for 11. In game pings are around 18-25. Downloading is fine and usenet is fantastic :)

GDW I download backups for dvd movies that I currently own but don't want to play in my player because it's scratches them but i can't copy them myself because i need to downsample them a bit so i download the dvd-r off the newsgroup for totally legal and legitamite purposes. I also download pc games, xbox games, ps2 games music, divx's all for the above very legitimate reason. I do not condone downloading such things for illegal purposes. It'd be downright wrong, and god will kill 2 kittens everytime you do.

Newsgroups are fab, gdw.

Ok Ive just phone Nildram (as they seem to be rated highest by the ADSL guide.

Apparantly if I want to go for their cheaper package of £25 I have to contact my current ISP to cancel the service. Then apply to Nildram, wait 2weeks without a service and pay an activation fee of £60. Therefore I cant make a saving for 12 months.

Alternatively they can migrate me on to their equivalent £30 monthly service with no disconnection and no atcivation fee.

Sounds a bit shite to me.

Ill stay with BT thanks Nildram says I

Yes I've done this. I 'only' got the 3 months reduced fee... but I'll be doing it again when the period runs out :)

Dear God, Tiscali customer service is appaling. :eek:

The best ADSL broadband providers are still Pipex and Nildram. I will recommend Nildram until the day I die.

And why isn't this in the broadband forum?

Exactly why I posted it here instead; I wanted more than two responses :)

I posted this probelm in webdev this morning and it has only had one, unhelpful, response all day :(

Can't update my bw site today; message says
STATUS:> Connecting ftp data socket 213.221.172.70:43502...
ERROR:> Can't connect to remote server. Socket error = #10060.
ERROR:> Failed to establish data socket.
